A 250 year old oak tree in Youngsville is on the chopping block. The tree is in the way of the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Highways 89 and 92 in Youngsville. At Wednesday night's meeting, the Youngsville City Council was presented an alternative plan by engineers that would spare the tree but at a cost; time and inconvenience.
The alternative would require that a portion of the roadways be shut down during construction of the roundabout, while the current plan would allow traffic to continue flowing in that area. In the end the council voted to keep the curren plan for fear of an economic impact on area businesses should roadways in that area be shut down.
However, there could be some light at the end of the tunnel for the oak tree and it's supporters. Several groups are raising money to have the tree moved. Estimates show it will cost upwards of $250-thousand, and the tree would have to be moved within the next 30 days. The city has pledged to cooperate with plans to move the tree, should the money be raised.
