The schools I suggested are all an hour from the other and the smaller school is merged into the larger school

Due to the taxbase in Louisiana, what you suggest may end up needing to happen. I'm just hoping our legislators and whoever is Governor has the political will to make necessary cuts rather than bowing to the demands of Higher Ed to raise taxes to fund an over-bloated system.
Maybe another part to the fix is to set the universities free in the market, manage Higher Ed funding on the basis of some sort of program, maybe similar to TOPS but not as free with handing out cash, where funds follow the students based on what the state can afford. They can then set a course for themselves that would be responsive to students and alumni rather than politicians and the self-servants who preside over the multiple Higher Ed boards in Louisiana.
You mean run higher ed like Universities? Not like a populist's wet dream of 2 chickens in every pot? Make Tops an actual merit based program with real standards?
How novel..
It will never work here. The free lunch entitlement mentality is is too strong in both politicians and voters in Louisiana.
Nor do we want anything to do with LSU-E as another poster said. No University in this state should be associated directly with a Jr. College. The JC's need to find their own path and that should be a completely different discussion.
The scope of every University should be established and set in stone. Some should be merged to reduce overhead.
An example of consolidaiton:
La. Tech could combine with ULM. Maintain both campuses. No way you accomodate both student bodies on one campus anyway. Both offer the general undergraduate courses but split up the degreed course work between the two. Pharmacy at ULM campus, computer science at Tech campus etc.....
Administration combines, athletics combine. Would be great for both schools. Higher enrollment with reduced overhead.
Of course the name change could be an issue. I've got that covered. Louisiana Tech @ Monore. Both schools win.
igeaux.mobiYes Cajun90 I agree with you....
LSU should merge with Southern; That should be obvious, they're only a few miles apart.
