That is one of the best suggestions regarding higer education his has made. There way too many universities in this state to begin with. The state budget decesions he has made on the other hand....

I'm glad we are finally seeing something getting done on that front. Not all small schools should get merged, but there are a few low performers that need to get absorbed

About time. Now what to do with LSU-S, LSU-A and Nicholls?

There are/were some grumblings from certain people to close some of those schools all together HOWEVER that I don't see that happening. It is political suicide to even think those words for Jindal esp if he is preparing to run for President. Merging I think is still possible but even doing those things won't help the budget situation all that much. In fact, closing a few 2 year instituitions won't do THAT much for the budget either since they don't get a very big piece of the pie to begin with. This is why you don't budget on $100 per barrell oil....errr nevermind thats a whole seperate *itch session.

Nicholls does a good job of covering the bayou parishes and has some unique areas of study that can't be found anywhere else and it has some very big financial backers that help. But you are correct all the lsu's need to go away. Also ulm should merge with la tech se la should merge with lsu and mcneese should merge with ul. Just cutting out the college presidents even if the campuses remained would save la tons of money

ULM has the only pharmacy school in the state. They are certainly going to have a seat at the table.

LSU-S and Nicholls both post lower 6 year graduation rates (I prefer to use 6 yr rates, because as stated many times here, using 4 yr rates as a measure no longer makes sense). Not sure about LSU-A, because they're not on this list. However, I'm pretty sure they are now a 4 year university.

I don't know if you could completely close those schools, but certainly you can reduce LSU-S and LSU-A to programs to meet the medical/health care needs of their respective cities/regions. Anything else, people have other options, like LA Tech for business and engineering.

Nicholls could be concentrated to programs dealing with jobs in that region (oil & gas, health care management) and research needs (coastal erosion, estuary studies).

Xavier in New Orleans has a pharmacy school but it is private.

McNeese does NOT need to merge with UL. Lake Charles and that University are good for each other. UL is fine the way it is.

No one said that the pharmacy school has to stay where it is. If that's the only justification for keeping the place open, it's a weak one. ULM should be closed, merged or converted to a 2 year program.

All three should be either closed, merged or converted into 2 year programs. Same goes for Northwestern and McNeese.

Like I said, close, merge or make them 2 year schools.

End the end, the following schools should be fully funded:

    La State
    UL
    LaTech
    UNO
    SLU
The rest should either be closed, merged or converted to 2 year community college feeders.
