NEW IBERIA, La. (AP) - Iberia Parish Public Works are taking excavators to beaver dams in drainage canals around the parish -
again and again and again.
Assistant Director Terry Bourque says that crews have been destroying dams for months, only to see them
rebuilt in a matter of days.
Director Kevin Hagerich says a trapper has caught several dozen beavers since late last year. He says they're huge - about 75 pounds compared to 35 pounders up north.
Biologist Sharon Brown, who works for the nonprofit Beavers: Wetlands and Wildlife, says beavers are native nationwide. She says
studies have found that beaver populations rise quickly in spite of trapping. She says that semicircular fences around culverts and
devices called "beaver deceivers" work better at keeping canals
open.
