Any athlete failing to meet those criteria would be at risk of losing their scholarship. This has nothing to do with any coaches integrity, but holding student athletes accountable. Let's not question this coaching staff's intergrity because there will be some attrition, they have a right to do what is best for this program within the compliance rules of the NCAA. _
My comments were regarding a coach TAKING an athletes scholarship to make room for another athlete. I understand that there are many circumstances that an athlete can LOSE their scholarship. I see where my comments could have been unclear. I'm just a bit sensitive to the issue lately after all the "over recruiting" articles I've been reading. I think its an immoral practice and I don't understand how it can still be legal, but I guess if you make enough money...everything is legal. Oh well I'm off my soup box.

No, its certainly a subject worth discussion and concern. I think we will have a couple of local athletes learn that lesson this year.

I guess I should have been clearer in my previous post, didn't really explain my thinking that great.......I never intended to suggest yanking a scholarship. I was trying not to call out a single player, but yet trying to hint at the 1 upperclassmen walk-on QB on the roster. IMO, I believe Thomas' potential to play for this program is over. I think that it's perfectly OK to cut a walk-on, sorry if that offends anyone. Coming from someone who once made a team and got cut later, it sucks. But guess what?Life goes on. I promise.

With that said, I was under the impression that Billups wanted to be shown by the staff that he is a wanted man. He wanted return phone calls after his visit from the staff to confirm that he was wanted here. Thats what he was waiting on to commit. The way I interpreted the situation is that the coaches weren't all over Billup's as much as he would like b/c that position is not in great need. If I'm not mistaken, the coaching staff was hesitant in even offering him a preferred walk-on being we already have 6 QB's.

I was suggesting that, IF our staff was hesitant in offering him any kind of offer strictly b/c of the number of players already at that position, then I think the upperclassmen walk-on should be told thanks, but its time to part ways. This is where I compared the QB from Lake Charles High and Leonard to this situation. Don't let a player who has talent go somewhere else just b/c we already have too many numbers at that spot. Trim some fat and make room. We didn't offer him a scholarship, so we still have 5 QB's on scholarship. The only thing that changes is that now we have a freshman who still has the potential to be a stud compared to an upperclassmen who has had a hard time moving up on the depth chart. Again, I hate to sound harsh, but that's the reality of the situation.

If I completely misinterpreted the situation, as in the coaching staff is not all over him and weren't quick to offer him anything b/c they aren't 100% sold on him, I am truly sorry for suggesting this. I would rather keep Thomas, who isn't costing the team a scholarship, on the roster in this situation rather than replacing him with someone who the staff is not sold on.

Pretty good interpretation of the QB situation... I think.

You are limited to the number of scholarship players, not players in your program. If you were talking about Brady, it does not matter as he doesn't count against the scholarship limit.

There is also a title 9 imposed roster limit on men's sports.

I understand that.... Would you agree that the staff may have been hesitant in offering anything b/c 7 guys at a position where only one is on the field at a time is alot?

Also, maybe they don't mind having 7 guys being 2 of them are seniors. I just recall several people stating that QB was not a position of need when Billups name was originally brought up on this site, so don't expect the staff to recruit him extremely hard.

Especially since we just signed the most highly touted QB since Brian Mitchell. If Broadway doesn't get a waiver, that leaves Guy 1 year to start. Assuming Broadway would maintain the starting role while he was here.

But if he does, than you have 2012 with a SR in Gautier, Jr in Broadway, 2 So in Hollingsworth and Brady and a RS Freshman in Billups.

My thought here is that Billups would have a good chance to be the starter by his Jr year. and all indications are that their is a good shot at Broadway recieving his waiver. If I were Billups I would choose UL.

Is the situation at Rice any better:

    They have for 2011:

Incoming Freshman (highly touted) Grant Petersen
JR Taylor Cook played in 7 games in 2010
SR Nic Fauzzi played in 10 games in 2010
    So Jordan Taylor
So Taylor Hchague plaed in 5 games in 2010
    So Michael Poynter

So he would be at best coming in as a perferred walk on on a team with 6 QB's behind 3 guys who played in 2010 and 3 underclassmen and a starter with another year to play in Taylor Cook as well as a fairly highly touted Freshman. At least at UL he will be the only QB coming in as a Freshman.

Just from what I read, Guy sounds like a real competitor and if he believes he can get the job done, he won't have any problem going against anyone that is on the roster. I'm glad Broadway chose UL to transfer to, and wish him a ton of success, but you never know what can happen over the next few years. Coach Hud must want Guy, to say he has a spot waiting for him next year, because we really don't have the room and he's not going after any other QB. Hey, there's nothing wrong with walking on, I was a walk on at the UL Engineering dept for many years, and was glad I did :-). Come on to UL Guy! You won't be sorry.

Hey T, how many years of eligibility would Guy have if he walked on for 1 year? Sorry, if I missed that in another post. Does it depend if he practices with the team or game time?
