Tom McGuffin of Pensacola, Fla., one of the new signees for coach Bob Bass and the University of Louisiana program for next fall, won the boys’ championship at the Arrowhead Junior Golf Tour’s inaugural Showcase Classic last weekend at Regatta Bay in Destin, Fla.

McGuffin shot 72-71—143 for a three-shot victory over Matt Hungerman of Mandeville, the reigning Louisiana Class 5A champion, and a seven-shot win over Thomas Galloway of Covington, the current state Junior Amateur champ. A total of 57 players from four states took part in the event, which was the only one of the AJGT’s nearly two dozen events that was limited to high school players and open to those not on the AJGT roster.

Tournament officials said that McGuffin’s 72 on Saturday was the most impressive round of the event. Frequent and heavy rains made conditions tough and limited roll on a course that was already playing at 6,744 yards, but McGuffin still played Saturday’s back nine two-under. He was even par through 17 holes Sunday and birdied the 18th hole to lock up the title.
