A streak of light that illuminated the skies above Acadiana Tuesday night had many curious viewers calling the KATC newsroom.
"I just saw a white flash and then there was this big black circle of flame all the way around it with a tail," said Samantha Singletary who was driving on I-10 near Carencro when she saw the fireball.
Similar sights were seen across the South, from Oklahoma to Florida. In Breaux Bridge, security cameras were rolling at Poche's RV Park at around 8:50 Tuesday night when a green light flashed in the northern sky. So what was it?
"It was likely a meteorite," said David Hostetter, Curator at the Lafayette Natural History Museum and Planetarium. "Meteors themselves are very common, astronomers estimate about 25 million meteors in a 24 hour period worldwide."
The American Meteor Society tracks meteor sightings. If you saw something Tuesday night, you can report it by clicking here.
