Funny story about the good old days from, of all places, TigerDroppings.

    http://www.tigerdroppings.com/rant/d...=24043140&Pg=2

"I watched USL torment Northwestern. They intentionally let NSU hang with them in the first half. The score was tied. The NSU fans were going nuts. Then USL came out in the second half and laughed at the crowd. Roy smiled and yelled, "We're gonna start playing now."

USL put on a show and won by 40. The basket hanging dunks became so boring for them that they even pulled a globetrotter trick.

Lamar stayed under his own goal knowing USL could handle NSU 5 on 4. Ebron blocked a shot and threw it to Dwight who was standing 5 feet from his goal. He caught the ball and waited for an NSU player to challenge him. Eventually, a Demon guard came running up and jumping to block the shot. Dwight just handed him the ball. The NSU guy grabbed it and fell out of bounds into the cheerleaders. USL ball.

The NSU fans started filing out."

Back then, wasn't it also Northwestern State that played a slow down, hold the ball game (there was no shot clock) when USL was the top scoring team in the country and the game ended up something 16-14? Anyone remember that?

Remember beating Houston in Lafayette, both UL and UH had the same warmups. Drove to Ruston to see UL beat LA Tech when Bo scored 52 and left the game with about 5 minutes remaining and threw his wrist bands to the crowd. We used to stand in line an hour or two before each game to get seats in the bottom student section at Blackham and to watch them warm-up. With all of the All Americans and great players we had back then to build on, no telling where UL would be today had we not had the death penalty. Too many great memories to list. _
We played in the Sugar Bowl Classic three times in the early 80's. I saw all six of our games as I lived in New Orleans in those days. We beat Michigan State and lost to Mississippi State in the finals in our first appearance. In our second chance we beat Florida and Kansas to win the title. In our third appearance we beat Tennesse in OT and lost to Pitt in the finals. The third appearance came after the Graylin Warner bunch had left and the team was led by Cedric Hill. Even though we did not win the tournament, the win over Tennessee was sweet considering we lost close games to them in the NCAA and NIT earlier in the decade. Of course, in 2000 we lost another heartbreaking game to them in the NCAA's. Note that all six of those schools we played in the Sugar Bowl tournaments have teams in the major conferences. The fact that we competed so well against them shows how great a coach Bobby Paschal was.

    Gameday Storylines

•The Cajuns lead the all-time series with the Warhawks, 43-18. Last season, UL swept the regular season series before falling in the first round of the Sun Belt Tournament, 75-76.
•Louisiana is 27-2 all-time against the Warhawks in Lafayette and is currently riding a 26-game home win streak. In fact, ULM has not beaten the Cajuns in Lafayette since 1957 when the Warhawks handed UL a 78-74 overtime defeat at Blackham Coliseum.
•J.J. Thomas looks to extend his streak of double-doubles to four games in-a-row. The last Cajun to post four consecutive double-doubles was Reggie Poole in 96-97 season. Poole finished out the season with five straight double-doubles.
•Randell Daigle is 10 points shy of becoming the 39th player in UL history to score 1,000 points in his career.
•Saturday's game coincides with the UL Basketball reunion. Players from as far back from the 1940's through the 2000's will be honored at halftime.

    Scouting the WARHAWKS

•Senior forward Lawrence Gilbert has scored in double figures in three straight games and four of his last five. Over the last five games, Gilbert is averaging 13.6 points per game on 56.1 percent shooting from the field. Gilbert is just 180 points shy of reaching 1,000 for his career.
•ULM ranks fifth in the Sun Belt in scoring defense, allowing just 67.6 points per game.
•Junior guard Fred Brown and junior guard Hugh Mingo each rank in the top 10 in the Sun Belt in minutes played this season. Mingo ranks fourth, averaging 34.8 minutes per game, while Brown ranks ninth at 31.9 minutes per game.
•Sykes tallied ULM's first double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds against South Alabama. It was Sykes' second double-digit rebounding game of the season.
•The Warhawks' three highest scoring games of the season have all come in the last month (87 vs. Union College (Jan. 4), 78 vs. Northern Colorado (Dec. 22), 72 vs. FIU (Jan. 2)).
•ULM has had five players score at least 25 points in a game this season (Fred Brown, twice, 25 against Texas Tech and 25 against South Alabama; Hugh Mingo had 27 vs. Centenary; Lawrence Gilbert had 28 vs. Northern Colorado; Tommie Sykes had 32 vs. Union College).
•Four ULM players are averaging double figures in scoring this season (Tied for the most in the Sun Belt).

    SEASON'S BEST

•In the 94-62 win over Centenary, UL set season highs in points (94), field goals made (40), field goal percentage (61.5, 40-65) and steals (13).
•The 32-point winning margin was the largest since a 91-42 win over New Mexico State in the 2004-05 season.
•Last season, the Cajuns only scored 90-plus points in two games. This season UL has put up atleast 90 in four games - La. College (91), Troy (93), Middle Tennessee (91) and Centenary (94)

    •Versus the Gents, he had a career-high 19 points and 13 boards.
•At UALR, the freshman forward scored 11 points while dominating the glass with 16 rebounds. It was the most rebounds by a UL player since Valentino Hart had 17 against Tennessee in the 2006-07 season.
    •Against Arkansas State he scored a game-high 16 points with a team-best 10 rebounds.
•In his first double-double against Texas College, the freshman guard scored 15 points and 11 rebounds in 30 minutes of action. All of his 15 points came in the second half where he was 5-for-8 from the floor.

Wayne Julien was a 6'7" center from New Orleans who could jump well. He played in the Andrew Toney days. He improved with time which was likely due to the good coaching he received. I rank Marcus Stokes ahead of him however. Stokes was a guy who also played center at 6'7". He played with Michael Allen, Eric Mouton, Byron Starks, etc. on the Marty Fletcher teams of the early 90's. He hit the winning shot to beat Oklahoma in Norman. He also was a great rebounder for his size.

Ebron was easily the best big man to ever play here. If he had a bad game, the opponent the next time out could forget handling him. Think of Charles Barkley with 5 more inches on him. I did not see Elvin Ivory play but Cajuns67 tells me he was quite a force in his own right.
