LOUISIANA La. — Former Carencro High basketball star Kirstien Simmons may have loss a battle with Southeastern Louisiana University, but on Monday she won the war.
After being denied her request to be released from the National Letter of Intent through an appeal with the university, Simmons was then granted her release by the NLI Steering Committee.
“Happy doesn’t even begin to explain the way I feel,” said Simmons’ mother Katrina Hebert. “The first thing she said was ‘I have my life back’.”
“My mom called me Monday night and told me and I just started crying,” Simmons said. “When she told me, I just felt a big burden lifted off my shoulders. It’s a big relief.”
As a result of the decision, Simmons, who has three years of eligibility remaining, has decided to transfer to the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns where she will be eligible to play on the first day after final exams next fall being that she will enroll for the spring semester.
“I’m looking forward to playing for the Ragin’ Cajuns,” Simmons said. “I can’t wait to be on the same team with familiar faces such as Onna (Charles) and Blair (Brodhead). I just want to add to what they already have.”
