I was friends with a guy at Rivals (I will withhold the name) who ran the Louisiana prep area. When Kp was being recruited he told me that there is actually a couple of guys who look at the tape and decide on the stars. It isn't a fair system and only a rough idea of how a player will play down the road. It's unfortunate that so much emphasis is placed on that rating system.
Not to contradict what you are saying, but to point out something that may not be obvious, 4 and 5 STAR athletes submitted Sophomore tape. This is the dirty little secret:
1) Not all schools have game film available.
2) Very few know where to send it.
3) Nobody even bothers speaking with anyone at a HS with a losing record.
4) It's nobodies responsibilty to do any of this at 90% of the HS's out there, so it's not done.
5) Players and parents are usually completely in the dark and do not start asking questions until their senior season arrives.
6) Players with connections that know this needs to be done, on teams that have film available, are pre-marketed in almost every instance.
7) Local affiliate recruiting service sites that are aligned with specific large fan bases have the stroke to get a kid reviewed early and graded favorably, so their recruits for their affiliated team, are ranked higher.
8) Last but not least, some kids play out of position or in a scheme that does not promote their talents, a WR in the Veer or a RB in the Spread, etc.
This is the system folks, it is what it is. What it means is, TOP 25 Teams have the most subscribers so they have the system engaged and their recruits appear to be ranked higher. The truth is, their recruits are, because they have done the right things to make sure it happens.
Sure, there are exceptions, but this is how the system works.
THE MYTH? The myth is that fans think recruiting services get film on every player from every school and actually review it and rank players based on talent. This simply does not happen.
It's more like the Rivals or Scout guy hears that Coach Saban was at XYZ HS, follows up with the HS coach to see who he spoke with, and the HS coach provides information on the player for a profile to be started...
