Boomer...this is interesting.
I went to scout.com and checked two players we're going after...Montrell Carter and Trae Carter. One is a 3 star player and the other is not even rated at this time. But both have a comparable list of schools after them. And both lists include some BCS programs.
Just shows that "stars" don't always tell the right story.

Mississippi Stars from Louisiana-----Ole Miss---2 3stars----Miss St---3 3stars----S Miss 2---2stars------If we can turn this thing around we maybe get a couple more of the 3s leaving state and now ya talkin'!!!!!
Many of the players he is going after, especially from Ms are overlooked. We've been on this whole star thing. Many of those guys haven't been truly evaluated enough to have any type of rating system acknowledge them, or at least yet. By overlooked, I also mean guys like a Montrell Carter or Efrem Reed who will be small for their positions that they play at the next level. This often scares larger programs away or kids who have questionable academics going into their final months of high school. Many of the larger programs are already close to their limit of signees for this particular class and will not take a chance on a kid with questionable academics unless they perceive him to be worth the chance with what he can do on the field. This is one of the reasons you will see these programs signing more than 25 players during a year but some are always left out to dry. Bakari Hollier and Micah Eugene are two classic examples of overlooked. They were not heavily recruited all year. After both had superb seasons on a state championship team, Hud went over and offered both on the spot. LSU got wind of this and did the same thing shortly after and Eugene committed. You couldn't have better examples of overlooked right in our own backyard.
I find it more than ironic that when we had no 3 star athletes on our list of commitments in the past, 80% of us defended the "stars don't really say much" campaign. Now that we've got a few 3 star athletes on our list, we are chest bumping about it. In reality, the star system still has the exact issues its always had. If we had all 3 star recruits... and we were jawing with one of our beloved instate past and current "rivals"... we'd point to our 3 star average and blow and go. I have the same feelings about the star system as I did 5 years ago. I see where it is valid and I see where it isn't... and it is not linear whatsoever from 2 to 5.
Once we start getting a higher star average (coupled with the fact we will compete with and win out over a more respected list of programs than in the past) I'm going to beat my chest over it. Am I going to expect that to culminate in more wins? You better believe it. The only stars I care about are in the shape of Ws.
If we start getting a lot of 3 star athletes... with a couple 4 star guys as well... I am going to pound the drums of the star system like a professional drum pounder. It is going to say positives and create even more positives for our program. The worst reality of the "nothing but 2 star recruit" issue with an FBS school is the lackluster stamp it puts on your program. My drum pounding will be more for removing the lackluster stamp than an admission that a targeted 2 star FBS football player is inferior to a 3 star athlete.
People have pointed out that Boise came to power with 2 and 3 star athletes. There is much more to that point. Boise will now recruit the exact level of talent, but by virtue of that talent stating it has interest from Boise State, a 2.6 star kid will miraculously become a 4.2 star kid. That is the big flaw of the star system. Regardless, I cannot wait for UL to become defenders and benefactors of the star system.
Just go to Scout and check out TCU's commit list for 2011 or Nevada's list. There is no overwhelming amount of 3 or 4 star players on either. You'd expect different from TCU considering they could end up as the #2 rated team in the country after the championship game is concluded. It's about perception. QB smith who may commit to TCU in the future likely would have been a 2 or possibly 3 star athlete but because he committed to TCU, he ends up as a 4 star. The reverse can be said for the likes of UL. A 3 star kid recruited by USM, Ole Miss and Memphis may be listed as a 3 star player but if he commits here, he very well could be reduced to a 2 star rating by signing day. It works both ways.
