Thread: Star check

One thing you gotta remember, in order to be seriously considered by the big name athletes, you gotta prove you can develop players and win. I remember Coach Crooms first year at State, we got 25 2 star athletes, most of them ending winning us a bowl game. Dan has changed the mindset at MSU now, do in large part to the staff he put together. Give Hud a few years, your gonna be fine

Stars are influenced by little things that may impress one star giver and not another.

Other schools interested is affected differently every year based on need and availability.

there is no perfect way to a rate a commitment till years later.

Still I like looking at both methods.

I guess a huge part missing in this discussion is who decides how many stars and how the system works to determine how many stars-----another thing is whether some may have something to gain from it---say I am a "star giver" and I want to attract attention to some local kid----I have already mentioned that it was hard for me to tell the better players in high school and where they would project in college----but I have seen underrated kids come in a college program and out preform guys with higher ratings-----Besides God who gives us the stars?????

Exactly, Boomer. the system has inherent flaws that make it an inexact science (with very little science involved). Cajunsmike made a good point this morning regarding this. TCU just finished a great season and will likely wind up #2 in the nation. Yet their recruiting class was not "rated" number two in the nation four years ago.

The ranking system is not so different from the professional baseball scouting system. High School kids are scouted by pro baseball more on potential than anything else. Only 48% of all first round draft choices ever make a major league roster.

The star ratings for football are probably better than this but still highly flawed.

I didn't get the impression that Coach Hud was going after players who are sometimes overlooked or not that known. He said he wants to put a fence around Louisiana and has already recruited some top athletes in Miss. He will compete against anyone for a player. Star athletes have never mattered to UL because we never got any, so it was easy to dismiss any rankings. UL has been at the bottom rung of recruiting forever and our records have reflected that. As we start to recruit better and higher ranked athletes and move up the recruiting ladder, this should be noted as a recruiting tool. This is obviously not an exact science as there are schools like Boise State who win with 2 & 3 star athletes and there are always unheralded high school players who become stars and 4 & 5 star players don't always pan out. Maybe there is little difference in 1 and 2 star athletes, but there is a reason the BCS schools that lead the recruiting lists with 3, 4 & 5 star athletes and are always in the top 25. It seems to alway be dismissed by losing teams, but is a big deal to teams that are successful. It is time for UL to step things up in recruiting and be recognized for our successes.

You are recognized for success when you start having it on the football field. TCU, Boise State, Utah and other successful mid-majors didn't recruit 3* athletes before they won. Tulsa has gotten by with 2* and 3 * athletes for the most part. Coach Hudspeth has a great reputation and having two proven recruiters like Saunders and Stringer will help the Cajuns this season.

Having a Terrance Broadway transfer to UL is the first step in attracting quality athletes, but I wouldn't expect more then five or six 3* athletes in the first class. More will come as the new staff builds a recruiting base in Louisiana through summer camps and the spring evaluation period. UL can build upon that by a few winning seasons and bowl appearences.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't "5 or 6 3-star players" be way more than what we've ever gotten?

Hell Cajun T we ha e never signed more than 2 three star kids in a single class that I can remember. If we get 5 or 6 it will go down as the greatest class in UL's history. I hope we can Sign that many and they are all qualified.

Wow!!! Not so long ago (like 1 month) this statement was inconceivable. It’s happening before our eyes…thank you T-Joe, D. Walker, RCAF, & S. Farmer for making the above statement possible.

No kidding. The past few weeks have been a real departure from where our program has spent the past decade it seems. So much more enthusiasm for offseason moves and recruiting. Granted, part of it is installing a new head coach and the staff changes that includes.

However, the caliber of kids who have interest in our program now is really amazing to see, and I am looking forward to buying season tickets this year for the first time ever.

Keep in mind, if we land both Broadway and Conner they would not be ranked as 3* or 4* stars this year. But clearly those two would give you two right from the start.
