We don't know what would happen in an open QB race with a new coaching staff in place. All of the QB's we have here have truly shown themselves, at times, to be worthy of starting. The interesting thing is that we don't necessarily know how Hud will structure the offense. Sure, we expect him to run the spread as the primary offensive set with some possible pro-sets thrown in there as he mentioned in the past but truly nobody knows. Likely, he doesn't know as he hasn't even had a chance to meet most if all of the players face to face, much less possibly watch film to break down their skills. The spring will be very important to see what he feels about the strengths and weaknesses of the team and then develop an offense that utilizes those strengths. I think that will be key to figuring out who will be the leader for the starting job. If its a more pass oriented attack I would assume that Masson would at least be the leader going into the spring. Outside of that, I think that Gautier is the best runner of all of our QB's and I think he's proved it. I also think he may have the best blend of both passing and running skills but he's been prone to making mental errors in the passing game thus may be a bit more inconsistent.
Broadway may be the most talented QB we have for the spread offense but I still won't assume the job is his heading into the season if he is eligible. We always see it when guys who are considered to be much more talented than others due to hype or whatever reasons don't get it going as quick or simply can't beat others out on the depth chart. He will have to come in and show he can run the offense better than all others just like they will. He was assumed to have the job at Houston after Keenum and his backup went out and played fairly well and still lost the job to another freshman in Piland. Granted, that offense was likely a lot different from what we will run but he didn't get it done there so I will wait and see.
I do like the fact that all will likely have a pretty equal chance in earning the job as none of the staff is invested in either of these players. The competition should be fierce and whoever wins out will likely have to be playing at a very high level to secure the job and that always makes your team better.
In regards to Hollingsworth, I wouldn't assume that he would transfer either. 3 of the top 4 QB's entering this year will be upperclassmen. That would only leave him, Broadway and possibly Brady Thomas and Billups if we get him to sign. He could earn playing time in the next couple of years and be a contributor
