Just wondering, because LSU sure loves to add -eaux to everything that ends in the long "o" sound, which is retarted since Baton Rouge isn't Cajun and neither is a large majority of the student body.
Here is something else lsu can add "eaux" too...

Something their fans are very familiar with...

Careful now, you don't want to get the six-named delphi poseur to rear his head now. We'll get another annoying thread about how much we make up stuff!

But, we all know the truth about Geaux

You said it all. The whole thing is retarted becuase Baton Rouge and LSU are about as cajun as clam chowder.

The atchafalaya river has always created a virtually impassable wall between Acadiana and Baton Rouge, that is until I-10 came along. I guarantee you that no one in Baton Rouge was eating gumbo and crawfish 50 years ago. And I guarantee you that no one would have understood what geaux meant. And I guarantee you that when we call then coullions they still don't know what it means.

If I remember correctly, I went into the service in 1969 -1973 and while I was in the word " Geaux" was being passed around as part of our lingo, It also may have come right after I came back in the fall of '73 , but "GEAUX IS OURS.

Also another one LUSAMBR uses is Hot Boudin cheer, David Toms, LSUAMBR golfer uses it to express his pride for the tigers. I have heard him say it on national TV.

Let's face it, when cajuns were popular, no one cared, but soon as the people discovered the cajun heritage, everyone in Louisiana wanted to be Cajun. That includes Shreveport Louisiana. This year when or if you watch the Indenpendence Bowl, listen how the announcers make Shreveport sound like they are in Cajun Territory.

I know for I fact, cause I am a converted Redneck from North Louzeana, who came to UL back in 1996 and have never regretted it. I have live hear over 2/3 of my life and will die hear. Everytime I go back to N. La., I hear and see businesses trying to jump on the Cajun Heritage Band Wagon. Shreveport even has its own "MUD BUG FESTIVAL". That's fine but don't claim to be a Cajun. I don't, even though I am proud to be a UL Ragin Cajun.

The hypocrisy of those people, D Toms is a redneck from Shreveport. Ain't no cajun.

    Default Can we license "GEAUX"

If there are any lawyers out there, can ULL copyright or Trademark "GEAUX" so that no other school can use it?

    Too late for that.

It should be noted that the current font for lsu athletics is also called "geaux".

No, it has fallen into come use for too long. Also, it would take actual proof, that some employed by UL started the use of the term. Not urban internet legend.

At the Alvin Dark reunion in 2006 (former UL Athlete and Dean) Glynn Able told me representitive Domengeaux was the first person to say Geaux Cajuns. He said it stemmed from confusion on how to pronounce his name and his love of the Cajuns.

Unfortunatly he didn't give me a year, we were interupted.

My guess would be that nobody "stole" the swamp name. I have a feeling both universities came up with it around the same time.

As far as the Geaux thing goes...its pretty dumb for LSU to claim ownership.

Ask a BR person where they are from and you'll hear something like "bat'n roosh". No French pronunciation at all.

How did these people come up with a French pronunciation of "Go" when they don't even pronounce the French name of their city in French?

That being said, it really doesn't bother me if they use "geaux". There isn't much stuff going on in BR. They are stuck between two major cultural areas in New Orleans and Lafayette. They need all the help they can get.

Outside of Acadiana, French "sounding" terms were simply not in vogue until many years after UL made Cajun cool, by becoming the Ragin' Cajuns.

I found a UL publication (L'Acadien) with a "GEAUX CAJUNS" quote from 1976. The quote doesn't say it was the very first time ever used or seen (which is important) in fact the reference is very nonchalant in its mention of using "Geaux Cajuns" reference. It is only mentioned in connection with the new scoreboard since "Geaux Cajuns" was the first game winning phrase ever written on the new scoreboard.

I don't know who used it first, nor do I care. However, I can assure you that "Geaux" isn't French or even sound French. If Geaux were French, it would be pronounced "Joe". Using French phonetics, if you want to say "go", you need to spell it "Gau". After all, its "Gautreau(x), not "Geautreau(x).
