Thread: Asst. Coaches and Recruiting

    Default Asst. Coaches and Recruiting

Would someone bring us up to date on the assistant coaching hires? It has been a week and very little written on that. Who has he actually hired and are they on board yet? All I know for sure about is Coach Hud kept Weingerter and Rebowe. The OC he wanted declined the offer as I understand it and he may be going after a coach at Troy, but has to wait until after the Saturday bowl game. Is that the guy or someone else if Troy keeps him? I think we have a DC and Recruiting Coordinator. Are they on board yet and doing recruiting?

I was just wondering the same thing.

Stewart is the DC. Reed Stringer is the Recruiting coordinator. I think the OC and many of the position coaches Hud is targeting are on bowl teams so little can be done until they complete play. We are after Edenfield but Blakeney has been doing what he can to keep him there so that is also up in the air. Main thing is that we will have to continue to wait until many of the bowl games are complete to truly find out what will occur. Wingerter will remain but I do not think it is necessarily as a position coach and Rebowe will stay but I'm not sure as to what capacity.

Reed Stringer is the recruiting coordinator. Played at Delta State when Hudspeth was the offensive coordinator there. Was a member of that D-II national championship team in 2000. They coached together at Mississippi State. His wife went into labor the other night, so he's been back in Mississippi to spend time with the family and the little one. He was at Clemson this past season.

Greg Stewart is the defensive coordinator. Was on the coaching staff as DC at Delta State along with Hudspeth. Won two D-II national titles as a player at Troy in the 1980s. Was Jacksonville State's DC from 2000-10. The Gamecocks had the top scoring defense in the Ohio Valley Conference from 2006-09, if I recall correctly.

Marquese Lovings is expected to coach the defensive line. Spent the past three years as a graduate assistant at Mississippi State.

Still believe Edenfield will leave Troy and end up here. Which title he gets will depend on whether Steve Campbell changes his mind and leaves Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. There were rumors that Campbell was going to visit campus to tour the facilities this week. Haven't heard anything else about that. If Campbell doesn't come here, I'd expect Edenfield to be the offensive coordinator. If Campbell does come here, I'm hearing Campbell would be assistant head coach and running game coordinator (as well as offensive coordinator in title) while Edenfield would be passing game coordinator and receivers coach.

As Hudspeth told me earlier this week, he's talked with some other coaches about coming here, but nothing solid yet on those guys. He said those candidates are all coaching bowl teams and/or part of winning programs.

Also told that Rebowe is expected to coach safeties (he coached that spot here prior to working with the linebackers). Rebowe and Hudspeth worked together at Nicholls State in the mid-1990s. Rebowe was special teams coordinator/defensive backs coach/recruiting coordinator there from 1995-99. Hudspeth was receivers/tight ends coach in 1994 and '95.

Wingerter would likely be the director of football operations.

I'd expect the coaching staff to be finalized within the next two weeks or so. The upcoming bowl schedule has made things a little more complicated, but Hudspeth is doing what he can to put together a quality staff as soon as possible.

Thanks, JP. This all sounds very good. I'm very excited for the future of the UL football program.

    Again, you do tremendous work.

I thought Campbell came out and said he wasn't interested after he had accepted the position?

That's what I thought. On a side note, I heard both Mel Kiper and Todd McShay saying that out of all of the college bowl games taking place this weekend, Troy has by far and away the best NFL talent and that Jerrel Jernigan is the best player playing hands down. I think all the teams playing are BYU, UTEP, Fresno St, Northern Illinois, Ohio and Troy. I'm sure Edenfield had a hand in some of that talent....and Troy's low academic standards..lol.

Campbell has said that publicly. But I'm hearing that he could change his mind. There have been rumors that he was going to tour the facilities at the end of this week. Not sure if it happened.

What has happened more, Mel Kiper being right or his hair moving?
