Thread: Tracking the PRO Career of Kyries Hebert

  1. Default Re: Kyries Hebert BACK ON CANADIAN SOIL

      The saga is over.

After three months of holding out, arbitration talk and appeals, Kyries Hebert has finally made it to Winnipeg.

Now the 25-year-old linebacker/safety just wants to play some football for the Blue Bombers.

"I'm very excited to have it done, and I'll have an opportunity to be a part of a very good defence," said Hebert yesterday at a hastily called press conference at the Bomber office.

Hebert spent last week in Grand Forks, N.D., after getting turned away at the Canadian border at Emerson last Monday due to his legal woes, but he actually arrived in Winnipeg via airplane on Saturday at 9:30 p.m.

That's because Hebert flew from Grand Forks to the Canadian consulate in Los Angeles on Friday to do a second entry interview, which was set up by Bombers immigration lawyer Ken Zaifman.

That meeting obviously went much better than the one he failed at Emerson last week, and Hebert flew from California to Winnipeg on Saturday night.

"Once he got through the airport in Winnipeg, he had the documentation and the authorization to work," said Bombers GM Brendan Taman. "And that was all based on everything being set up with the consulate in Los Angeles."

  3. Default Was he worth the wait

It was one of the more prolonged, bizarre tales we've seen around here in a while, and that's saying something.

It's time to find out if the wait for Kyries Hebert was worth it.

The former Ottawa Renegades defender/special teams terror makes his debut for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in a first-place showdown against the Montreal Alouettes here tonight.

And Hebert, wearing his No. 23 for the first time yesterday, was nearly busting out of the thing in anticipation.

"It feels good, man. Like a million bucks," he said. "I wasn't this way three days ago. But today, oh yeah. I put this on, it was like Superman goin' into the booth."

Tonight, Hebert promises, he comes out flying.

"I know you're going to get everything I have," he said. "I'll leave it all out on the field. Action-packed. You won't see me doin' too many things half-speed. You'll see a lot of flyin' around. Hard hittin'."

Yes, the man was oozing confidence, like sweat, from every pore.

    Real saga

The thing is, that's the way people like GM Brendan Taman and defensive boss Greg Marshall have been talking about Hebert since the Bombers acquired him.

Actually, the lengths the organization went to says it all.

  4. Default Re: Kyries Hebert

Kyries Hebert played a Canadian Football League game Saturday, and that was news.

The former Eunice High and UL standout had a pass knockdown, a tackle and a special teams tackle in his debut with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He also had an interception in the fourth quarter overturned on an instant-replay review, one that was apparently controversial.

It came in a 44-16 loss to the Montreal Alouettes, a game which kept Montreal unbeaten (4-0) and snapped a three-game win streak for the Bombers (3-2).

But for Hebert, the score and the records didn't mean as much as his return to the field, after months of legal wrangling involving contracts, waivers, felony and misdemeanor charges and immigration problems.

"It felt good, man, like a million bucks," said Hebert, who missed the Bombers' first four games with those legal problems. "I wasn't rusty. I'm 25 ... when you're that age, football is just like riding a bike."

  5. UL Football Q&A with Kyries Hebert

The Sun's Kirk Penton sat down with Bombers linebacker Kyries Hebert to learn a little more about him, including his soft side, why you'll want his services if you're building a barn and why he's maybe only a phone call away from hanging with Beyonce ...

Favourite Canadian? From Shaw TV, Kim Babij. She is, by far, my favourite Canadian.

First car? It was 1998, and I had a 1995 Mitsubishi Gallant. It was fast.

    Dream car? Ferrari Spider.

Sexiest movie star? They just need to put me in a movie and I'll say myself.

What's your cellphone ring tone? I don't have one. It's pretty basic.

Best word to describe you growing up? Active.

TV show you're ashamed to say you watch? The TV show I'm afraid to say is my favourite show -- Friends. I love Friends. I like all the characters. All of them. I can tell you the first and last names of each character on set and off set.

Which Bomber has the most style? Me. I like myself more than I like any of these other guys. And my style is nothing special, but it's mine.

Who would play you in the movies? They'd probably have to get someone like Tyrese. He's a little dark, but he'll have to do. I'm not quite that dark, but he'll do.

    Food you won't eat? Escargot.

Does Barry Bonds deserve to be in the Hall of Fame? I would say yes, because I don't feel like I'm in a position to discredit all the accomplishments that he has achieved throughout his career. Because who says what happened when. There's no timeline. No one can draw an adequate timeline of what happened in his career.

What do you miss most about college? Experiencing true love. That was when the flowers bloom in the springtime ... birds and all that good stuff.

THREE-HUNDRED PAIRS OF SHOES no wonder they didn't want to let him in the country.

  7. UL Football Kyries Hebert on a Mission

But if Hebert continues to play like he did against the Montreal Alouettes last week, the special teams tackles crown should be a lock. His six tackles on kick coverage was one less than the CFL single-game record.

Not that he needed such a performance to draw rave reviews from head coach Doug Berry.

  8. UL Football Re: Kyries Heber on a Mission

KYRIES Hebert is on a special mission.

Through two games, the Bombers safety leads the CFL with seven special teams tackles, three more than anybody else in the league.

If Hebert has it his way, he'll be atop the list by a whole lot more when the regular season wraps up in November.

"I don't even want it to be close," said Hebert. "If I'm anything less than No. 1 with at least a five-tackle lead, I'll be disappointed in myself."

  10. NFL, NBA, MLB No Rest for Kyries Hebert

Kyries Hebert, 26, recorded six defensive tackles and a quarterback sack from the safety position in Winnipeg's 20-18 CFL victory over the Alouettes. He added another four special teams tackles and, when the smoke clears this morning, he will likely be alone atop the standings in special teams tackles -- he was tied for first going into the weekend.
