The Renegades did what was necessary to lock up Kyries Hebert.
The key was the guarantee.
In a move certain to create a stir from coast to, well, Montreal, the Renegades have made Hebert the CFL's highest-paid defensive player, signing him to a landmark, five-year contract that will earn him in the $1-million range if it is fulfilled.
The first two years of the deal are guaranteed -- particularly noteworthy in a league that rarely sees a player get a one-year promise -- and will pay the two-year veteran linebacker around $300,000, including a signing bonus.
The Renegades had to make such a strong commitment or risk losing the 25-year-old Louisiana native to the NFL.
"Getting the first two years guaranteed was something I didn't think I could pass up," Hebert offered from Houston yesterday. "I was definitely going to get a shot (in the NFL), but I needed more than that. I have responsibilities ... I have two little girls, a house, cars ... you don't get that stuff taken care of with a 'maybe we will keep you and maybe we won't.' I can't gamble on myself when it means gambling with my daughters.
"I 100% know there are guys who aren't as good as me in the NFL, but if you're not in the right place at the right time, there's a whole lot of things that can go wrong before the talent issue comes into play."
Hebert, a 6-foot-3, 210-pounder who combines speed, fierceness and a penchant for making the big play, was one of Ottawa's top players last season. He led the team in defensive tackles with 66 (a modest 13th among league leaders) and also finished tied for the CFL lead in special teams tackles with 29.
The former Louisiana Ragin' Cajun also registered three forced fumbles and three interceptions, two of which he ran back for touchdowns.

LINKHebert arrested in Texas
By Eric Tillman, Sportsnet Football Insider
Kyries Hebert, who recently signed a controversial five-year $1-million contract extension with the Ottawa Renegades, has been arrested in Texas after a dispute with his wife, Kristina. Hebert was charged with an alleged assault with a deadly weapon and was released Friday on a $50,000 bond.
Hebert, 25, attended two NFL training camps (Minnesota and Houston) before signing with Ottawa in the spring of 2004. Over the past two seasons he started at both safety and linebacker and earned a reputation as one of the CFL's best young defenders and special teams players.
Although highly publicized, the contract extension signed back in December has not been officially accepted by the Canadian Football League. League insiders, who requested anonymity, cited the guaranteed portion of Hebert's new deal, as the "sticking point."
When word of the hefty contract leaked out, many CFL leaders complained to the league office about the danger of approving a "guaranteed contract" saying that it was establishing a "dangerous precedent."
Hebert and his wife, who are both cooperating fully with authorities, are the parents of two young children.

That sucks. Hope things work out with the two of them for their family.Originally Posted by PantherCanada
A grand jury in Texas yesterday indicted Renegades linebacker Kyries Hebert on felony charges of aggravated assault, using a deadly weapon and resisting arrest.
That means prosecutors can proceed with a case against the 25-year-old, who could face trial after being accused of assaulting his wife last month.
The allegations include Hebert holding his wife's head under water while threatening to kill her at their home in Brazoria County, near Houston, during the evening of Jan. 11.
Persons accused of felony crimes in Texas receive grand jury hearings before prosecutors can proceed with a case.
From this point, Hebert could go to trial, enter a plea bargain, plead guilty, or the charges could be dropped for various reasons, including if Hebert's wife made such a request.
WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced today that they claimed linebacker Kyries Hebert off waivers from the Ottawa Renegades franchise.
"He's the kind of difference-maker and an impact player on defence that is too good to pass up," said Bombers G.M. Brendan Taman. "We're very excited to get him. He's going to be a huge upgrade to our linebacking corps and will add substantially to our special teams unit."
Hebert (6-2, 217, Louisana-Lafayette '01, DOB: Oct. 9, 1980 in Eunice, Louisana) is rated as one of the top young linebackers in the CFL.
The former Renegade ?backer led Ottawa in defensive tackles (66) and tied for the league lead in special teams tackles (29) in 2005. He also had three interceptions, returning two of them for touchdowns, and added three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, two pass knockdowns and one quarterback sack. Herbert was the CFL Rogers Player of the Week for Week 20 with a three-interception performance in a win over the Toronto Argonauts that set a franchise record for picks in a single game.
It was an impressive follow-up to his rookie season with Ottawa in '04 when Hebert collected 56 tackles, 27 special teams tackles, one pass knockdown, one tackle for a loss and two interceptions.
Kyries Hebert was about "an hour away" from signing with an NFL team yesterday, and at least one CFL squad had already put an offer on the table.
Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Winnipeg Blue Bombers GM Brendan Taman pulled a fast one, claiming Hebert off CFL waivers just five minutes before he would have become a free agent both north and south of the border.
Hebert, a top-notch outside linebacker and special teams stalwart, was not claimed in last week's dispersal draft of Ottawa Renegades players. The thinking was his big salary and his arrest stemming from a domestic dispute in January were the reasons he was passed over.
He was scheduled to become a free agent at 3 p.m. yesterday, but Taman decided to take on his contract -- and his talents -- at 2:55 after local immigration lawyers told him Hebert likely will be able to enter Canada this spring.
The move shocked Hebert, his agent and likely several other CFL GMs as well.
Hebert was in Cincinnati yesterday, apparently ready to sign with the NFL's Bengals, when his agent, J.R. Rickert, got a call from another NFL club at 3:15 p.m.
Rickert expected the call was to schedule a workout with that team, but the caller told Rickert that the Bombers had claimed Hebert.
"We're a little stunned right now," Rickert said last night from Florida. "That's the best way to describe it.
"... It's pretty unfortunate, because I'm pretty sure Kyries was going to get an NFL offer."

Is that part of the recent deal the NFL made to prop up the CFL? The NFL can't sign players when a CFL team has their rights?Originally Posted by NewsCopy
