Just responding to the guy's post about which is better. I would think most coaches would rather win a conference championship and have some hardware in the showcase. For recruiting this means way more to a recruit because the team proved to be the best during the season versus finishing second on 3rd in conference and going to a meaningless bowl game and beating another team on the same level and losing money as well. Cajuns would be better just winning the conference and head to New Orleans. Travel won't cost as much b/c bowl is close and tickets sales would be high. Unless you are one of the few teams that actually make a profit for their bowl appearance. Bowls are all about the money and advertising for the sponsor and local community hosting. The Sunbelt will not pay FIU that much money to head to Detroit to play in that bowl game. FIU will lose money for going play in their bowl game.
Now you sound like a democrat. Take a sentence out of a paragraph and want to comment. Read the whole post and understand. Have you ever been inside the house of a kid being recruited? Coaches harp on conference championships. No I didn't realize bowl game you trophies, I thought they just shook your hand and said thanks for coming. I hope you are not recruiting for the Cajuns.
"Look son, conference championships don't mean much, the trophy for winning the Little Ceasar's bowl is much nicer."
Win or lose, a simple bowl appearance is worth more than a conference championship.
Opponents rarely mention UL's multiple conference championships from the 80's and 90's, but they are quick to point out the bowl drought since UL went to it's 2nd bowl in the early 70's.

Oil Bowl

1970 Grantland Rice Bowl
Because of the drought, the only reason making a bowl game seems to be more important. Why would a coach tell a kid come make a difference so we can achieve a bowl game. Championships way more important the drought of 40 yrs. is the only reason it is discussed. This is the longest bowl drought in the history of Division 1-A football. Its the only reason it is brought up kind of like the losing streak Prairie View A M had in football. Everyone was pulling for them to to win. In today's times, if you win the conference you go bowling anyways.
Thats an easy stat to remember. Hopefully they can add to it by having a vision of wanting to win the conference.
Well there are teams who have never been to one before but your right that streak is just a black mark on this whole program. How will we ever go on? I'm sure somehow, someway, we may just be able to find the courage to keep trying to meet your level of paper tiger expectations. How does Les Miles' crotch taste?
At the level the program is at currently Conference Championship (but that doesnt mean totally disregard the Out of Conference Opponents like our previous coaching staff and some fans on this board have enjoyed keeping favorable logic in) and the Bowl game will come along with it.
As far as higher conferences (if we ever move out of sunbelt) then the only bowl games more important then conference championships would be the BCS bowls and National Championship games. but that is out of our reach for atleast 20 if not more years.
