Thread: 2002 - Bustle Is Promised Scheduling Duties

  1. Default 2002 - Bustle Is Promised Scheduling Duties

    Initial Rickey Bustle Press Conference

We all know that the Ragin Cajuns schedule is unrealistically tough. For a program having been as down as it was the 24th ranked schedule (in the nation) will just keep them there.

Having to deal with the 24th toughest schedule in the country is not fair to coach Bustle or his staff or the players. No BCS school so far has had it as tough as Louisiana has.

Fortunately for fans of Louisiana, Dr. Authement promised coach Bustle he could make his own schedule in the future, after this string of guaranteed loss games was over.

Here is a snippet from Coach Bustle?s initial press conference after he was hired. He was asked the question "How much will you have to do with scheduling?" Dr. Authement is the "you" in coach Bustles reply.

The voice that chimes in is that of former play by play announcer for the Cajuns; Todd Hamilton.

The second voice is that of Nelson, answering how long coach Bustles contract is.

I'm not too sure if some of you know this, but Coach Bustle is a personal friend of my dad's. He told my dad that next season we play 8 conference games, and we play a big game against Kansas State over there.

One of the things about a small school, especially a new D1 school, is they can make tons of green by doing one game away stints at big names (OSU, KSU, A&M, etc).

I know it really blows to get knocked around these games, but the money it brings in to a small program is huge. Also the extra added bonus of possible TV coverage, name in some form on E$PN highlights, and the possibility a good showing will get some national media attention.

we are not a new D1 school! we've always been a D1 school.
you know......i understand that you guys are concern about the toughness of the schedule, well, as a former athlete, i wouldn't have any other way, besides how do you measure the level of improvement you have made or hope to make, to me it's playing good solid competition, maybe not as many, but that's how you get better in the long run, as a recruit that's what i'd look at.....play the hand that you are dealt, no crying, strap it on and let's get to work in my opinion, we will get there and be the better for it.

I don't mind playing as many games against tough opposition as we have this year, but I wish they could be spaced a little better. Starting the year with six games against much more talented teams is a killer. It's tough on the guys to start 0-6.

When it's all said and done all anyone remembers is the record.

sorry, this is not true. how often you hear people talk about how a team got to "that point," when they improve the level of competition on the team and improvement of the program. you go out and you first, pay your dues, they respect that. i am sure you know how coach got the baseball at the level it is and what he expect......he played tough competition, i am sure you would agree....... we will be fine.
    go chatting guys.

Everyone remembers the record and how it happened but the further you get down the road all they remember is the record. For example I have heard a few people say that Baldwin had three wins his last year and coach Bustle didn't do any better. But I have not yet heard that Baldwin got some of his wins against D1AA teams and Bustles all came against D1. I have to come down on the side of fans do eventually forget how the wins came. At least the further down the road you get this sure is true.

Someday, other schools will say, "Yea, we lost, but you expect that playing a tough team like the Cajuns!"

    Wouldn't that sound good???

It is good to play "big" D1 teams but sometime enough is enough.

Anyone think Bustle was given what he was promised?
