Thread: UL Alum?

  1. #1

    Default UL Alum?

I seem to recall someone stating that the owner of Acadian Ambulance is a UL alum. Can anyone confirm this? If so he sure isn't helping us any and in fact is helping to screw us.

Both Richard Zuschlag and Richard Sturlese are UL grads.

It is unfortunate that a business leader who has profited tremendously from our community and University might not be supporting it. I'll wait until I see the plan but if I don't like it then it might be time to take Mr. Zuschlag to task.

What follows is a response to the NOLA article by one of their readers. Thought the person made some excellent points.

Why so much focus on the "flagship" idea? I'm all for LSU becoming a better institution,
but if you ask me, the whole idea of putting so much emphasis on one single "flagship" university is misguided. How many states with decent higher education systems have only one high-quality public university? LSU is ranked 60th among public universities in the U.S., and it's the only public university in Louisiana in the top 107. Iowa has two in the top 50. Alabama has one in the top 40 and three in the top 100. Kansas has two in the top 70. Even Mississippi has two in the top 80!
Some others: Virginia has three in the top 30 and five in the top 100. North Carolina has two in the top 60 and four in the top 107. California is a very large state and, like Louisiana, is having major budget problems in higher education, but it has five public schools in the top 10 (!!!), seven in the top 30, and 8 in the top 50.
Do we really want our public higher education system to emulate Tennessee and Nebraska, each of which have only one public school in the top 100 (tied at 47th to be more exact)? Keep in mind that Louisiana isn't exactly home to a plethora of highly-regarded private universities, either.
Our "flagship" has a quite a way to go to even be ranked 50th. Does being the 60th-ranked public university really merit a "flagship fee?" I guess I would support the idea if it might mean having more funding available for institutions other than LSU, but I'm not confident that that would end up being the case.
UNO is one example of an institution that could easily crack the the top 100 if it was given sufficient resources. Again, it would be great if LSU improved, but the improvement of LSU shouldn't be the only goal that the state's higher education system has.
Finally, residents of the New Orleans area should understand that the Grad Act, while having positive aspects, effectively stacks the deck against some the state institutions in and around New Orleans.

As Tech comes up with their Sports Science building---I ask why doesn't Acadian Ambulance throw big bucks our way and build the leading center of the state--This could be partnered with all the major Health centers in the Acadiana Area----Have the Acad. Amb. Center with wings by Lourdes, Gen Hosp. Wom and Child, etc.---Various Doctors could provide
different room sponsorships!!!! Hey we are only talking money and these Lafayette area folks have it!!!!!

Acadian has really grown over the years. I worked there just after graduating from USL back in 1980. Probably had less than 50 units and I worked units 2 and 3. I had noticed Acadian units showing up in San Antonio over the past couple years with unit numbers in the 2-3000 range! Struck up a conversation with one of the unit medics recently just for grins. When I told him which units I had worked he was stunned! Anyway, he said there were well over 2500 units working all over the place now. AA would be a nice partner to get at UL to support medical specialties, with the resources to place grads throughout the south, and Z is in a good position to advocate for UL.

Zuschlag is on the board for the TAF. Last time I looked he has graduated from some Podunk tech school. I just thought it was strange that since his business was started here he doesn't do a's much for our community

Go look at his 2 LSU painted airplanes at the Acadian hangar. Maybe that will answer some questions.

We know the Sturlese family very well. In fact, we have drilled wells and established production on a couple of their properties in Cameron Parish. Richard went to both LSU and UL. Richard served as President of TAF a few years ago. His brother went to UL and is a die hard Cajun fan.
