Acadiana is gonna win!
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Micah Eugene rushed for 121 yards and the
winning touchdown as 27th-seeded Acadiana defeated fourth-seeded
and previously unbeaten West Monroe 21-14 for the Class 5A state
championship Saturday night in the Superdome.
Eugene, who carried the ball 22 times, also had a 63-yard pass
reception, which set up his decisive 1-yard touchdown run early in
the fourth quarter.
The Wreckin' Rams (10-5) were one of the top-rated teams in the
state at midseason before being forced to forfeit four games for
using an ineligible player. That dropped their record to 3-5, and
they had to win their last two games to qualify for the playoffs.
Acadiana, which lost to West Monroe in the 2005 final, won the
2006 title and lost in the 2007 final.
The Rebels (14-1), the defending state champions, entered the
game with a 29-game winning streak and seven state titles since
1993.
West Monroe trailed 13-7, at halftime, but quickly changed that
as Devontis Ellis returned the second-half kickoff 94 yards for a
touchdown and a 14-13 lead.
The Rebels were moving into position to increase the lead at the
start of the fourth quarter, but Bubba Reeves fumbled and Claude
George recovered for the Rams at their 27.
On the next play, Ryan Bergeron threw the 63-yard completion to
Eugene that set up his 1-yard touchdown run three plays later.
Terry Abraham's run for two points gave Acadiana a 21-14 lead with
9:33 remaining.
The Wreckin' Rams took a 7-0 lead on the first play from
scrimmage when Bergeron threw a 72-yard touchdown pass to Abraham.
They increased the lead to 10-0 on their second possession when
Jean Breaux kicked a 26-yard field goal.
The Rebels' first scoring threat failed when they faked a field
goal on fourth-and-4 from the Acadiana 11 and place-kicker Beau
Benson was tackled by Keith Ollison for a 6-yard loss.
Breaux kicked a 40-yard field goal to give Acadiana a 13-0 lead
with 4:35 left in the second quarter.
West Monroe cut the lead to 13-7 at halftime after Paul Turner
threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Cody Stone with 1:48 left in the
second quarter.
Earlier in the day, 15th-seeded White Castle defeated
ninth-seeded Ouachita Christian 32-20 in the Class 1A championship,

overtime in the Class 4A championship.
