I certainly hope not. Those offenses put up points but I think to win at a high level, there has to be a level of balance. We lacked this when we were running for 260/game in 2008 but didn't throw very well.

The object of the football game is to outscore the other guy. It does not matter how the points go on the board unless we are trying to win the Super Bowl, the National Championship or the SEC. Those guys have to be balanced.

We only won 6 games in 2008 for 2 reasons.

1) Desmo got hurt.

2) The defense was putrid.

It had nothing to do with The Mighty Ragin Cajun Steamrolling Zone-Option Freak Show.

We've also had success in recent years running this same spread scheme. This year we resorted more to a pass spread attack and it worked. The OL was not healthy enough to gel and protect the QB or open up enough holes for the backs. We do not have to reinvent the wheel here for this offense to be successful. No more so and probably less than having to completely change your offense if Sewak were to be hired. To me, that would be a mistake when this team is ready to win now.

There is no such thing as a Pass Spread attack. That is simply a passing offense which needs a very good, pro-style QB.

A true Spread offense requires the QB to run the ball often as evidenced above.

I too am a bit concerned about running the same scheme, because this means we must upgrade our talent. We haven't been a solid recruiting school compared to our peers in a while (ever?).

Our success will depend 80% on our increased recruiting ability with a new coaching staff if Hudspeth is hired.

Going further into the numbers....


Most of these years, we were nearly 50/50 in run/pass play calls with the exception of '05, '06, '07, and '08.

In these years, we were at 65/35 run/pass or higher.

You'll notice that 3 of these years were the most productive in the Bustle era with the exception of 2006. That is the year that for whatever reason, Babb did not run as much as we all thought he should have.

This just furthers the point of the Spread is really a run oriented offense. It is really a form of option football. When Urban Meyer was hired at Bowling Green, one of the first people he went to for help was to none other than Paul Johnson.

This matters because if you try to "tweak" the offense in the passing direction, you had better have an excellent passing QB on hand.

By the way, Mississippi State this year? 67/33 run/pass

We will run the same offense if Hudspeth is hired. If so, let's hope we can find another Desmo or Babb. To be successful with this offense, you had better have a stud QB that is not afraid to get dirty.

Nation gets it. "spread" offenses are really ways to get great misdirecting runs and open passing options. Go watch Oregon's offensive line. They flatten everything. Don't mistake a QB in the shotgun as being finesse running. Alternately, go read up on these concepts at the "Smart Football" website.
