Unless the two I know we are intereted in say No, the next head coach will be a current FCS head coach.

    IMHO.

That is where I think you are wrong. Yes, there are guys like Will Muschamp and a few other big time coordinators that will only leave for AQ schools. But, there are hundreds of coaches who want to be a HC no matter what the program status is.

I am against a FCS coach because we need a recruiter first, coach second. There is not a single FCS coach who has ever out recruited an FBS program consistently enough for me to consider them. Viator beat UL on the recruiting trail for props, he never beat UL for a kid that was tops on UL's board.

What we need to find is a coach who wants to use this program to land a high profile job.

What we need is a program builder. A competent man. If all you have is a position coach who can recruit like the devil, that in no way tells me if the man has the instincts to hire the right staff, or the temperment it takes to command men into battle.

If you're recruiter hires the wrong staff, you are dead in the water, no matter the talent. He won't know it is the wrong staff until it is too late, and he won't know who to trust in making it right. Crash and burn stuff right there.

Don't write off "old" coaches because they may not move on to a bigger program. Do you think Troy is not happy with Blakeney(62)? Do you think Nevada is not happy with Ault(64)?

To think an FCS school should EVER out recruit an FBS school over time is ludicrous. They never do, but they often beat a particular FBS school more often than they should because they often have better coaching staffs.

There are some outstanding FCS coaches out there, some outstanding leaders of men. Give me one of those guys over a hot-shot recruiter who knows nothing about building a winner.

It is all subjective to the coach in question...

UL has to take some risks. There are going to be "resume trade-offs" no matter how we approach who we hire... due to our program history and attributes... and the money we are going to negotiate with... what exactly will we end up with?

I think selecting (and getting selected by) a new coach is a little like looking for a new girlfriend. With what we have to offer, exactly what are we going to demand in the assets of that girl... what comprimises will we accept... and what girl will take us?

Local HS Coaches - Desperate girls that have some appeal but you wonder why they are so eager to date you. None of your friends want to date her. She thinks you should date her because you grew up in the same small town and know the same people. If she works out - huge hit. If she fails - you are the laughing stock of your area and beyond. She doesn't really care if you have a job. She is very skilled with coupons and bargain shopping.

Big Name Coaches - Big breasted, big smile, older than you, always dolled up and looking for the next party... not really sure whether the flash is worth it... not really sure if the flash is hiding an STD. Who else has been all over this gal and why is she willing to date you? Wants to "show you her tricks" but has a strange look in her eye when she suggests it.

Large Program Coordinator - Supposed to have a hot body under that warmup, hangs out with all the hot chics... you know it is all about the money for her... she's either a hot chic that is just looking for a chance... or she's a dude with fantastic makeup skills. You have to decide whether taking off that warmup should happen in your bedroom or not. Either way... your friends get the video.

Lower Division HC - You only have a picture of her... pretty sweet looking. Everyone tells you she's fine, is really intelligent and has a great personality. Raised in a little podunk town and currently dating a local guy with a mullet haircut. Hummm?

    Decisions, decisions.

Look we have to be realistic. We are a mid- size program. We have to take a srtong look at a Coach that understands our program and what we need. We dont need someone who thinks this program is a stepping stone. WE NEED A COACH THAT WILL BE WILLING TO BUILD OUR PROGRAM TO A TOP LEVEL, A CHAMPIONSHIP LEVEL, A CONSISTANT WINNER. We dont want this to be a revolving door type of situation. This will only set us back. Now lets look at a list of coaches who would maybe interested or we should take a look at and why. this doesnt they are the guy.

Clay Jennings- TCU secondary coach, TCU has been a consistant winner and may win the national championship. He has won a championships at Houston as well. He coached at ULL for several years and is a coach on the rise. Has a def background and TCU has one of the top defenses for several years.

Frank Wilson- LSU RB coach. He was part of the turn around at Southern Miss. He has worked at Tenn. and moved onto LSU now. He has strong Louisiana ties. Has been one of the top recuiters in Louisana for several years. Very well respected in the state. another coach on the rise.

Matt Viator- Mcneese State Head Coach, is a proven winner. Has beaten ULL and several other mid level programs. Has ran a top level program for several years. Has won several conferance championships. Very well known through out louisana.

Eddie Gran- Florida State -Special teams coord, has worked U. Miami, Cinn, Ole Miss, Tenn and now Florida St. He has coached many NFL players and won many championships. Has been one of the top recruiters for a very long time. Is a proven coach.

Brian Jenkins - Head Coach Bethune Cookman, has worked at Rutgers, ULL, NFL Europe and other winning programs. Won the conf. in his first year as a HC. One of the Top recruiters in the state of florida and louisana. Has coache many top level players. Proven winner

Blakeny is at Troy because no other program will ever touch him, even with a ten foot pole. He was caught cheating at Auburn and then in turn spilled the beans on the entire program. That is a death sentence in college coaching. That is why he is at Troy and never moved on.

That is one reason we passed on him in the past. Troy has lost their APR exemption as well, if I am not mistaken. We will see how good a coach he is in the next three years when he has to recruit the same type of STUDENT everyone else has to recruit.

His current Salary is in the range of $650,000. I personally think that he would make a lateral move to get away from Lane Kiffen, plus he has a better chance of getting to a bowl with UL next year than with USC. Now a lateral move to Lafayette would not need a salary of 650K per year. I am not saying that 425 will do it, but think about the cost of living and everything else that makes it a whole lot less expensive to be in Lafayette than it does to be in Souther Cal.

I like reading all the other posts. It cracks me up to see how everyone argues about all these little details. Everyone has the answer... but no one does.

Why would you want a coach to stay here forever? We are mid major, not a legacy program. If a coach plans on staying here forever then that means he is not motivated enough to continue to excel.

It also means that we could look at 7-5 for our best seasons.

He has already told the administration that it will take $750K. He will not be our next coach unfortunately.
