Its not like LSUA&MC plucked Saban out of obscurity. He had been making his mark at Michigan State and was considered a hot prospect. While very few hires can be considered a sure thing, to imply that LSUA&MC was blindly going out on a limb when they went after Saban is ridiculous.
I don't think it is a fine line at all. Every coach should emphatically deny he is being interviewed, wants to be interviewed, and should say he is the happiest person in the world with his current employer. I think they should all say the exact same "coaches speak" to everyone that asks.
The only ones I do not working at UL are the ones dumb enough to jeopardize the job they have by admitting they would consider some other job.
"No comment" is a bad situation for a coach in the middle of recruiting. He should absolutely say "I am not going anywhere... I love it here". If he leaves, he should say "things changed... I'm going to XYZ". No athlete should ever, ever believe that their coach cannot be fired or will not leave the program.
And as for fans... and I love those folks... but they are owed no "real" information regarding interviews whatsoever... until the deal is complete.
