Thread: Reasons you don't give fake extensions for recruiting purposes...

  1. Default Reasons you don't give fake extensions for recruiting purposes...

Some say it is recruiting suicide to have a last contract year coach, I disagree.

    1) For one you are giving away $60 thousand (reduced buyout) dollars needlessly.

    2) You have no idea if the next coach will have the same recruiting philosophy.

    3) The year-1 coach brings much more fire power to the recruiting game. Always! Meaning caliber of players goes up.

    4) You put the new coach in an awkward position to honor early commitments, which may or may not match his style, or be of the caliber he would attract.

    5) It puts out any loin fire that would have been lit when one finds themself in the last year of a contract.

I think in this case it was simply a fake recruiting excuse for a contract extension. UL was not in the position they wanted to be to hire a coach, so they postponed it a year and just said it was because of recruiting

You say all that but what if he wins 8 game? You have crippled his recruiting power...the right decision was made.

That is the word on the street but here is why (I feel) that logic carries no water.

A lame duck coach about to become an 8 game winner has more recruiting power than at any time since his first year.

He is given a legitimate mid season contract extension creating more positive program buzz than at any time since his original hiring.

We did have a good recruiting year last February. Note the OK State game when 3 pure freshmen scored TD's. We also got Streeter last year and he was effective before being injured. The extension with the revised buyout did help in that regard. I was concerned when I first heard about it but then realized it was a good move until finding out the buyout was only 60 grand.

The buy out is not only 60 grand. I have a copy of the extension.

You will take a hit in recruiting anytime there is a coaching change period. The contract is irrelevant at the point a staff is released. This is why you must hire a coach with recruiting contacts in Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi and the Gulf Coast. If you are recruiting those areas as an assistant at a BCS program, athletes and HS staffs will know who your are when you make contact.

Coach Lee didn't have a buyout, did that help Coach Marlins' first class? It's irrelevant in the area of recruiting once the coach is terminated. It does matter for your football budget.

This is a non-issue. The Coach is moving on, we’ll have a new coach shortly. Why worry about this?

Nothing to see here folks, move along now.

See points 2, 3, 4 and so you never repeat the same mistake.

Turb. Sorry, but compared to the Coaches salary, this is chump change. We all get a little severance package when we lose a job, that what this is.

There is really no point in blowing it out of proportion. He is not being fired for being a bad person or violating rules, so why would you want to be vindictive? Coach Bustle is a decent stand up guy. He was not successful enough but why all of hate?

This 60K will have no effect at all on what the next coach earns or how he recruits. I just think you are dead wrong on this campaign.

Thanks for replying to point 1.

As far as being vindictive or hateful, I am neither. This thread is for those who think UL can toss around $60 thousand for no good reason and act like it is chump change. . . . among other reasons but hateful and vindictive are not on the list.
