  1. Track & Field UL victories for Whitfield, Credeur at LSU

BATON ROUGE - Seniors Walter Whitfield and Laura Credeur won the men's 5000-meter run and the women's 800-meter run respectively for Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun track team here Saturday in the LSU Purple Tiger Invite at the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse.

Freshman Jake Simmons finished second behind Whitfield in the 5000-meter, with Whitfield turning in a winning 14:58.01 effort. Credeur had a winning time of 2:26.50 in her victory.

"I'm pleased with our performance considering it was the first meet of the season," UL coach Lance Veazey said. "However, I'm not satisfied. We still have plenty of work to do over the next couple of weeks."

Scott Lowry finished fifth in the men's pole vault, while Kyle Ward finished fourth in the men's 60-meter hurdles.

The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Louis Roquemore, Jon-Erik Shanklin, Jarman St. Julien and Jarvis Murchison finished fourth overall.

Shanklin and Kade Slaughter finished fourth and seventh, respectively, in the men's 200-meter dash. Shanklin finished with a time of 22.40, while Slaughter finished at 22.74.

  2. Track & Field Louisiana To Compete In Bayou Bengal Invitational

BATON ROUGE - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns & Lady Cajuns indoor track and field teams will compete in their second meet of the indoor season this weekend in the LSU Bayou Bengal Invitational at the Carl Maddox Field House.

Louisiana had some men and women perform well in the LSU Purple Tiger meet held two weeks ago with Walter Whitfield winning the men’s 5000 meter run and Laura Credeur winning the women’s 800 meter run.

Head Coach Lance Veazey said “The athletes have been working really hard over the last couple of weeks and we are still working out some of the wrinkles so the first of couple of meets is training for us.”

Athletes to keep an eye on for the men will be Walter Whitfield, Jake Simmons, Jarvis Murchison, Scott Lowry, and Derick Richardson.

For the women it will be Andree Bonvillian, Jasmine Collins, Laura Credeur, and Desi Chatman.

The LSU Bayou Bengal Invitational will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday in Baton Rouge and wrap up Saturday evening.

Is Jarvis Murchinson still a member of the football team. He was a member of Bustle's first recruiting class. He was offered by a few Big 12 schools out of high school and played some as a freshman. He has tremendous speed and could be used as a kick returner, conerback, or receiver.

    I agree with you.

Since I posted this LINK I found out he had decided to concentrate on track.

  5. Track & Field Louisiana's Walter Whitfield claims win at LSU meet

BATON ROUGE - Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns standout Walter Whitfield continued his impressive indoor campaign here Friday night by winning the men's 3,000-meter run at LSU's Bayou Bengal Invitational.

Whitfield's time of 8:36.22 was well ahead of unattached runner-up Phil Aagaard's 8:51.33, while UL teammate Ryan Dupree was sixth in 9:10.49.

Two weeks previous, Whitfield was the 5,000-meter victor at the Purple Tiger meet at LSU.

Whitfield's performance was the highlight of Ragin' Cajun efforts in Friday's meet.

Finishing in second place for the Cajun men were Kyle Ward in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.14, trailing only Northwestern State's J.D. Henry (7.98), and Scott Lowry with a 15-3 clearance in the pole vault.

Also, Jarvis Murchison was fifth in the 60-meter dash in 6.87 and Jon-Erik Shanklin placed fifth in the 400 in 50.25.

  10. Default Cajuns can't wait to host meet

Track program relieved to finally hold meet at home

Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns are like kids in a candy store this week, anticipating the long-awaited return of action at Cajun Track with Saturday's Louisiana Classics Meet.

Coach Lance Veazey's men's and women's squads have managed to stay competitive despite being unable to host a meet in recent years because the Cajun Track surface was unsuitable for competition.

And more recently, they couldn't even use their home facility for practice because it was being rebuilt with an up-to-date new running surface and a soccer field in the infield.

The long wait is almost over, though.

"It's a big deal," said Veazey, whose team picked up three individual wins at last weekend's UNO Invitational to start the outdoor season.

"It's not totally finished yet, but it's a nice facility and the track is functional. The kids are happy to be out there practicing. We've been on the new track for a week."

It's hard to tell who is enjoying the new track more - Veazey or his athletes. The coaches have been scrambling just to arrange practices while waiting to get back to their home base.

"Now, I can walk out of my office and go to practice," Veazey said. "Before, we had to load up the cars with equipment and starting blocks, we had to make sure everybody had a ride and then when we got there we might be trying to work with 100 other people around.
