    Lady Cajuns head to Denton Texas

    LOUISIANA La. – Louisiana’s LAdy Cajuns tennis team kicks off its fall season with a trip to Denton, Texas, to play in the North Texas Invitational.

    The tournament will last through the weekend. The Cajuns will be able to face two conference teams in North Texas and Arkansas State and another Louisiana school in McNeese State. Two other Texas schools, TCU and Tyler Community College, will participate as well. The University of Missouri is still uncertain if it will participate in the tournament.

    “The girls have been working hard the past couple of weeks,” University of Louisiana women’s tennis coach Lisa Jackson said. “We are confident we will do well.”

    Jackson is taking the entire team to compete in this weekend’s tournament. This will be the first showcasing of Ragin’ Cajun newcomers Tammy Day and Chanell Meijer.

    “We will get to play against some conference teams,” Jackson said. “So we will have an opportunity to see how we compare to those teams.”

    DENTON, TEXAS - Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun, Lady Cajun tennis team began its fall season Friday with two players making it to the semi-finals of the Mean Green Invitational.

    Cecilia Varela defeated TCU's Melissa Bere in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 to advance to semi-final play. She will face Missouri State's Urska Dobersek Saturday.

    Tammy Day defeated North Texas' Kelli Royer 6-1,1-6,6-3 to advance to the semi-finals. She will face Tyler Junior Colleges' Ina Weiding Saturday.

    Susan Linden and Kimmie Lyles will face off in Satruday's consolation bracket.

    Chanell Meijer was the only other Cajun to advance to saturday's consolation bracket.

  3. UL Tennis SINGLES PLAY OVER DOUBLES MATCHES BEGIN

    Denton, Texas-- Cecilia Varela and Tammy Day were the only Cajuns to advance in singles play to Sunday in the Mean Green Invitational.

    Varela defeated TCU's Melissa Bere 6-0, 6-3 but fell to Missouri State's Urska Dobersek 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. She will now face North Texas' Ashley Sammis to determine the third place winner of Flight B.

    Day defeated Kelli Royer of North Texas 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 before being losing in straight sets to Ina Weiding6-4, 7-5. She will play Megan Schmulbach Sunday for third place in Fight A.

    In doubles action Kimmie Lyles and Varela Advanced to the third place match on Sunday. They will face Alex Allin and Molly Purdy of TCU.

    Day and Chanell Meijer will be playing for the consolation championship of Flight A against Abu Batain and Ashley Sammis of North Texas.

    "It was really hot out there," Cajuns' women's tennis coach Lisa Jackson. "There girls showed their toughness though."

  4. UL Tennis Varela captures third in Mean Green tennis

    DENTON, Texas — University of Louisiana’s Cecilia Varela captured third place in Flight B singles competition here Sunday on the final day of the Mean Green Invitational women’s tennis tournament hosted by North Texas.

    Varela took a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 win over North Texas’ Ashley Sammis in the third-place match and was the only one of three Cajuns to win in singles outings Sunday.

    Tammy Day fell in Flight A’s third-place match 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 to North Texas’ Megan Schmulbach, and Chanell Meijer lost to McNeese’s Ann Grobbelaar 6-2, 6-2 in the consolation finals of Flight C.
