J-Town...like 'ya man but I think we need to leave Matt Viator at McNeese....Can we set our sights a little higher??......don't have any answers but I think we would be asking for another 10 years of mediocre Sun Belt existence...
I really like Hoglorson alot and he would be my first choice, but I would think he could hold out for a bigger job. Hoglorson has a awesome track record as OC of Houston, Texas Tech, and now Okla St.
Hudspeth is somewhat interesting because of his success at North Alabama but come on it is D2. At Miss St. he is not the OC but the passing game coordinator and Miss St. is not very good in the passing game ranking 91st in the nation. Also Hudspeth does not call the plays. He does not have the resume good enough for me.
I still believe we need to look into Viator at McNeese. In his 5 years as HC he has won or split 3 titles and is a 2 time SLC coach of the year. He has also put up some tremdous offensive numbers. Viator is very well respect in Louisiana and would be only 2nd to LSU in recruiting Louisiana each and every year. He is a very smart coach and tireless worker. He would get the job done and we would start winning SBC titles.
Crowton would be my 3rd choice.
It worked out pretty well for UL when they hired Robe. I have a very reliable source who has worked in the McNeese system before who said Viator would love to have this job. Look at what he has done at McNeese with very limited resources and financial support. I would think coach Viator would also not use this job as a spring board and love to stay right here in South Louisiana and build a successful D1 program. The perception of the program and the recruiting will improve with this hire in my opinion.
I would have to respectfully disagree. McNeese might have 10 players on their entire roster that would contribute and a given year at UL. We laid an egg when we played then in 07. We were 21 points better than them. If they do not get 5 turnovers 2 of which went for 14 points, they lose.
Viator does not recruit the same type of athletes that we are going after.
Like I said, I will have to disagree. He is a solid coach, but not even the best in the Southland. JC Harper is and I don't want him either. Viator may want out because he has to compete against JC Harper, Peveto, and Conque who are all in my opinion as good or better than Viator.
I respect your opinion also. This is what the boards are about. I must say it is much harder to recruit to McNeese than it would be to UL so just being at UL he would recruit much better and have a staff that would recruit Louisiana very well.
As for as JC Harper I have spoke to people who have worked with him at both Northwestern St. and McNeese and everyone of them said that Viator is a much better coach. One guy said Harper is a little on the lazy side and would not be that motivated. SFA is having success right now but I believe many fans get caught up in the moment to often. Harper is a defensive coach and always has been. Look at SFA team the past couple of years and it is not the defense that is winning games but the offense has been spectacular. Maybe we should look at the OC from SFA as a possible OC here at UL.
I have been told that we should look into getting Greg Davis Jr. from Tulane as an assistant coach. He would recruit well in Louisiana also.
Several of you on here know much more than me, but isn't it the case that we will have more quality candidates to pick from than ever before because we finally have some pretty good dollars to throw out there?

While that is certainly true, Viator is not even on the radar. This opening will pay around $400-450K and will attract some very good coaches.
You are foolish if you think that the UL program is not seen as a decent job at the FBS level.
Just look what the athletic department has to sell to a prospective coach in order to get him to want to coach here:
A complete campus renovation, new Union and Dorms.
An outside fund raising arm for athletics that is still in its infancy.
Cajun Field expansion/renovation.
A manageable schedule for next season.
Scheduling input.
Cajun football is growing and we need a coach who can capitalize on that growth.
