In roundball we do not retire numbers. Jerseys are retired. Lots of other places do this.
If that is the case, why has #10, #14 & #24 never been worn by anyone since Bo, Marvin and Andrew last wore those numbers. There are plenty of other numbers in Basketball that can be used besides those three. This is not football where a team might need 99 numbers. I love Coach Marlin, and he seems to have attempted to embrace Cajun Basketball tradition, but he needs to assign another number to Mr. Mbamalu immediatly! I hope that this is simply an innocent oversite on Coach Marlin's part.
In the event he does allow #10 to be worn by one of his players, it shouldn't be by a player coming off the bench. Whoever has the balls to wear one of those three retired numbers better be capable of averaging at least 25-30 points per game and become an undisputed MVP, All-American, etc...!!!!!!! I'm not sure this young man fits that profile.
Coach, please issue Mr. Mbamalu another number so he doesn't have that pressure on his back and this issue does not get out of control!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YES, I am serious!!!!!!!! You don't have to be a genious to keep up with three numbers!!! If every other coach since Coach Beryl Shipley has been able to do it, I'm sure Coach Marlin can do it as well.
I can only assume you were not around back then to see the players who wore those numbers play. If you were, you might understand.
I too believed that they are one and the same. If the kid keeps the number then I expect him to grow longer hair and bend his knees when he shoots. I vote to retire the number. Can someone start a poll?
I think the number is retired as well. But here is something to think about. Schools handle retired numbers/jerseys differently. Indeed, we handle them differently between sports here.
It is possible that Sam Houston had retired jerseys.
The one thing that is interesting is that it can be a recruiting tool.
1) Some kids like to where a certain number.
2) Sometimes you can impress a kid by telling him that you want him to wear the same number as another good player.
I was just informed by a reliable source that the reason #10 was being worn last night was because there was a mix up with the uniform supplier and not all of the correct uniforms have come in. There is a possibility that #10 could be worn for the first few games, but once all of the correct uniforms are delivered, the #10 will remain retired!!!
Therefore, for those that may be worried about my sensitivities, I can return to my normal state of calmness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
