Now, back to the coaching candidate discussion, if we do go with a coordinator I think I'd like to look for an up and coming defensive coordinator with HC experience at either DII or D1aa level. We have been down the road of offensive coordinators and its been a mixed bag. I think I'd like to see a tough defensive minded guy. I believe there is truth to the old adage that defense wins championships. _

Yes Hammer... you are right that McNeese interrupted... but let's go back to talking about the next candidate and quit quibbling over admission standards at places that have nothing to do with our problems.

I'd like the next coach to be very close to what you describe. We also need a guy that can assist in overcoming our poor public image. He needs to be articulate, engaging, energetic and knowledgable about the importance of fans and money (RCAF). He has to be able to mask his manliness when interviewing with our school management. I think you can understand why. But, he needs to be a force.

There are a serioius number of up and coming young guys in the coaching ranks that know football. They know that you succeed by choosing solid staff and managing the system. We all talk about the cost of the head coach... but by far the biggest issue is the cost of getting a good staff.

If I were a recognized young future leader/coach, my first order of business would be to secure funds for my staff before I concerned myself with a large salary. A coach that gets a great staff and finally puts UL in a bowl will not have to worry about his next contract negotiation and salary. He will never make it without a great staff.

FYI....The salaries for assistant coaches at UL are the highest in the Sun Belt Conference. And I'm willing to bet that they are higher than many in CUSA, the WAC and the MAC as well. And if a coaching change happens, that will probably go up even more.

God help us and Sam Winters help us. He's had success on a major stage and can definitely turn things around here. For crying out loud, you can't even say the man's name without saying WIN. In itself, that's an improvement over the current guy.

I think at our level, the offense is of most importance, but it's sort of splitting hairs. We need an excellent coach that has the ability to inspire, excite, and innovative in order to capture that edge which is needed at our level to compete with teams that are on paper, better.

Isn't another major difference that an FCS school can take an FBS transfer who is eligible immediately, while and FBS school must have that transfer sit out a year. You can get some pretty good football players eligible immediately, which can make an FCS school very competitive and likely accounts for many of the upsets of FBS schools recently.

Well since this was directed to me am I allowed to retort? or will it be viewed as a verbal dump?

Yes, the FCS can take a transfer from an FBS school as long as the transfer is qualified and up to speed on his APR. He is not required to sit out a year in the process. But, he can not transfer if he only has one year of eligibilty under his degree program. We took a student athlete that had finished his undergraduate degree but had one year of eligibilty left so he entered grad school.

I think Joe Flacco who QB'd at Delaware and is now with the Ravens did that very same thing to get more playing time.
