HAWKE’S EIGHTH INNING HOMERUN GIVES RED FALL WORLD SERIES CROWN
Red overcame 3-2 series deficit to win the World Series

LOUISIANA La. – Phillip Hawke’s third homerun of the series in the eighth inning Red team’s lead and later preserved Red's 5-4 game seven victory and the 2004 Fall World Series crown here Tuesday night at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.

After four scoreless innings, White scored first in the top of the fifth to take a 1-0 lead. With two outs, John Coker tripled to right field. Matt Casbon followed with an RBI single to left field, scoring Coker. Leonard Guerrero flied out to right field to end the inning.

Red responded in the bottom half of the frame with three runs to take a 3-1 lead, which it never relinquished. Dallas Morris was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Jefferies Tatford cleared the bases with a two-run homerun down the right field line, giving Red a 2-1 advantage. Ray Dees followed with a double through the left side. Trey Meche then advanced Dees on a sacrifice bunt. Cody Martin sent a sacrifice fly to center field to score Dees, increasing Red’s lead to two runs.

In the ensuing inning, White added a run to trim Red’s lead to 3-2. With two on and two out, Justin Merendino singled up the middle to score Micah Cockrell.

Red added a run in the bottom of the sixth to retake a two-run lead, 4-2.

In the top of the eighth, White crept to within one run, 4-3. Alex Preciado drew a lead-off walk. Matt Hicks followed with a single to right field and advanced to second on fielding error by Trey Meche. Preciado scored on the play on a second error by Meche.

In the bottom half of the eighth, Phillip Hawke added an insurance run, with his third homerun of the series, increasing Red’s lead to 5-3.

White added a run in the top of the ninth, but it wasn’t enough to overtake the Red team.

Red starting pitcher Buddy Glass earned a no decision, pitching four complete shutout innings. The freshman scattered three hits, allowing a walk with three strikeouts. Ian Pecoraro (1-1) received the win for Red, pitching four innings. Pecoraro allowed three runs on five hits, while striking out three.

White starting pitcher Kevin Ardoin (1-1) received the loss. Ardoin pitched four scoreless innings, before getting into trouble in the fifth inning. Ardoin allowed three runs on three hits, while striking out five. Ken Pokryfke earned the save, allowing one run in one inning of relief.
