First home match now slated for Sept. 10 vs. Louisiana Tech

LOUISIANA La - Louisiana's Lady Cajuns soccer team had its season-opening road trip extended by two matches and its home opener delayed by one week with the announcement of a schedule change Saturday.

The Cajuns were scheduled to open their home schedule Friday, Sept. 3 against McNeese State at Cajun Field, but a scheduling conflict with the Ragin' Cajuns football home opener against Northwestern State Saturday, Sept. 4, forced the match to be rescheduled.

As a result, the Cajuns will now travel to Lake Charles for a 4 p.m. match on Sept. 3 against McNeese instead of choosing another home date. The decision to move the match to Lake Charles also canceled an exhibition match between the two schools previously scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 21.

Added to a pair of matches against Florida Atlantic and Jacksonville in Boca Raton, Fla., and a road match at Tulane Sept. 5, the Cajuns will now play their first four matches on the road.

Louisiana's new home opener is set for Friday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. against Louisiana Tech in the McAlister's Deli South Louisiana Soccer Shootout at Cajun Field.

The Cajuns also scheduled a new exhibition match to replace the canceled McNeese match. University of Louisiana will now travel to Mobile, Ala., on Tuesday, Aug. 17 for a 6 p.m. match with the University of Mobile.

The rest of the home scheduled remains unchanged. Louisiana-Lafayette will host Mississippi Valley State (Sept. 12), Nicholls State (Sept. 19), Oral Roberts (Oct. 7), Florida International (Oct. 10), North Texas (Oct. 22) and Denver (Oct. 24).

The Lady Cajuns will begin preparations for the upcoming fifth season in program history when the team reports for preseason drills on Tuesday, Aug. 10.

The 2004 regular season is set to kick off on Friday, Aug. 27 when the Cajuns battle host-Florida Atlantic in the Boca Marriott Kickoff Classic in Boca Raton, Fla.

The Lady Cajuns were scheduled to open their home schedule Friday, Sept. 3 against McNeese State at Louisiana's brand new Soccer Field, however construction delay after construction delay have left the Lady Cajuns with no place to play.

Cajun soccer falls 3-0 to Fla. Atlantic

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Florida Atlantic used stingy defense and a late second-half scoring run to shut down Louisiana’s LAdy Cajuns soccer team in a 3-0 loss Friday night in the first day of the FAU/Double Tree Kickoff Classic.

UL (0-1) didn’t attempt a shot until the second half. The Cajuns were held to only five shots in the match, while FAU (1-0) was able to fire off 16 shots with nine coming in the opening period.

Florida Atlantic’s Kari Kaiser-Fernand scored the first goal of the match off a Christina Chang helper from the left side at the 16:12 mark of the first half.

The Cajuns were able to prevent the Owls from scoring for nearly 60 minutes. Christie Ashton scored the second FAU goal of the night with an assist from Meredith White at the 75:59 mark.

Nearly 10 minutes later, Chang put up the final Owls tally of the match to give FAU the 3-0 victory. Danielle DiLeo was credited with the assist on the final score.

Sophomore and Scott native Anna Brannon (0-1) received the start in goal for UL Lafayette. Brannon saw all five Florida Atlantic shots on goal, stopping two.

Freshman goalkeeper and Victorville, Calif., native Kristen Malen replaced Brannon in goal for the last six minutes of the second half.

In the other match of the day, Northeastern University (1-0) defeated Jacksonville (0-1) 3-0. The NU Huskies outshot the Dolphins 15-3. The match remained scoreless until the 50th minute. The Huskies followed with three goals in an 18 minute span to seal the victory.

UL will play its final match of the FAU/Double Tree Kickoff Classic Sunday against Jacksonville University at 11 a.m. (CT).

Louisiana lost 3-0 to Florida Atlantic Friday in the 2004 Season Opener

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Louisiana’s LAdy Cajuns soccer team will look to rebound from Friday night’s 3-0 loss to Florida Atlantic when they meet Jacksonville University here Sunday at 11 a.m. (CT) in the final day of the FAU/Double Tree Kickoff Classic.

Louisiana (0-1) lost 3-0 to future Sun Belt Conference member Florida Atlantic Friday night in the season opener for both teams. FAU did not allow the Cajuns fire off a shot until the second half. The Owls used a stingy defense and two late second half goals to hold off Louisiana.

In the first match of the FAU/Double Tree Kickoff Classic, Jacksonville (0-1) lost by the same 3-0 tally to Northeastern University. The Huskies outshot the Dolphins 15-3. The match remained scoreless until the 50th minute. The Huskies followed with three goals in an 18 minute span to seal the victory.

Senior defender and Lafayette native Natalie Hanks did not play in Friday night’s match, serving a mandatory one-match suspension dating back to the 2003 season. Per NCAA and Sun Belt regulations, Hanks was forced to sit out the season opener following her ejection in the final match of last season against Denver in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

Following Sunday’s match against Jacksonville, Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns women’s soccer team will travel to Lake Charles to face McNeese State in a 4 p.m. match at Cowgirl Field.

CAJUNS PLAY TO SCORELESS TIE AGAINST JACKSONVILLE
Louisiana-Lafayette will face McNeese State Friday at 4 p.m.

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Sunday’s match between University of Louisiana’s LAdy Cajuns soccer team and Jacksonville University needed 110 minutes, but the result still yielded a 0-0 tie here on the final day of the FAU/Double Tree Kickoff Classic.

Louisiana (0-1-1) and Jacksonville (0-1-1) have not scored in the first 200 minutes of the 2004 season. The Cajuns were shut out 3-0 by Florida Atlantic Friday night, while the Dolphins lost by the same count to Northeastern.

“It was unfortunate not to get a result,” UL Lafayette head coach Dave Poggi said. “We had two goals that were disallowed. I thought we played with a lot of commitment, but we are still learning about one another.”

Twenty-one Cajuns saw action Sunday afternoon, 10 of those freshmen.

“In the first half, we had possession for the majority of the match,” Poggi said. “We were the team that was definitely threatening, but we couldn’t get behind their backline.”

Freshman goalkeeper and Victorville, Calif., native Kristen Malen started the match in goal for UL Lafayette. Malen played all 110 minutes in goal, stopping six Jacksonville shots to earn a shutout in her first career start.

The Cajuns, meanwhile, were only able to fire off four shots on goal.

“I am disappointed that we didn’t get a win,” Poggi mentioned. “Even though the results don’t show it, I think this was a good weekend for us since so many players were able to see playing time. We will be able to build on it with experience at later points of the season.”

UL received two yellow cards. In the 66th minute, Colleen Henry and Meredith Smith were both issued yellow cards. The Cajuns committed 17 fouls, while the Dolphins were whistled for 23.

Louisiana’s LAdy Cajuns women’s soccer team will return to action this weekend when they face McNeese State Friday in a 4 p.m. match at Lake Charles.

Louisiana plays Tulane Sunday at 1 p.m. in New Orleans

LAKE CHARLES – Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns women’s soccer team looks for its first win of the 2004 season when they take on McNeese State here Friday afternoon at Cowgirl Field. The match is slated for 4 p.m.

Last weekend, Louisiana (0-1-1) lost 3-0 to future Sun Belt Conference member Florida Atlantic and played to a scoreless tie with Jacksonville at the FAU/Double Tree Kickoff Classic.

For their efforts, junior midfielder Meredith Smith and freshman defender Mie Nielsen were named to the FAU/Double Tree Kickoff Classic All-Tournament team.

Through the first 200 minutes of play this season, the Cajuns remain scoreless.

The Cowgirls (1-1-0) defeated Austin Peay 1-0 Friday, but dropped a 4-0 contest to Indiana State on Sunday.

Following Friday’s match with McNeese State, UL will travel to New Orleans to face Tulane in a 1 p.m. match Sunday at the Westfeldt Facility.

LOUISIANA La. – Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns women’s soccer team will host the McAlister’s Deli South Louisiana Shootout this weekend at Cajun Field. Louisiana-Lafayette (1-2-1) will play first-time program Louisiana Tech at 7 p.m. Friday and Mississippi Valley State at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Friday’s match is the Cajuns’ first home match of the 2004 season. UL Lafayette will play six additional home matches this season at “The Swamp”. The Cajuns have never won a season home opener at Cajun Field.

UL Lafayette’s only season home opening win came in the program’s inaugural 2000 campaign, with a 9-1 victory over Alabama A&M at Moore Park in Carencro.

Friday’s match also marks Louisiana Tech’s first-ever match in program history.

“Playing home matches is always an advantage,” Louisiana head coach Dave Poggi said. “All of our matches (as well as our preseason) have been away from campus so it will be nice to finally come home.”

SECOND HALF SCORING BARRAGE LIFTS CAJUNS 6-0
UL will face Mississippi Valley State in a 1 p.m. match Sunday

LOUISIANA La. – What a difference playing at home can make. Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns scored five goals in the second half, including two goals by former NAIA All-American Rose Clemensen, to defeat Louisiana Tech 6-0 here Friday night at Cajun Field in the Cajuns’ home opener.

Louisiana is now 2-2-1 overall, while Louisiana Tech falls to 0-1.

UL’s defense held the Lady Techsters to only one shot the entire match, while the Cajuns fired 37 shots.

The win marked the Cajuns’ first home opening win at Cajun Field in program history. Louisiana’s only other home opening win came in the program’s inaugural campaign, a 9-1 victory over Alabama A&M at Moore Park in Carencro.

In the 39th minute of the first half, Clemensen, a sophomore midfielder, scored her first career goal as a Ragin’ Cajun. Clemensen, a 2003 NAIA All-American honorable mention selection, was assisted by fellow sophomores Kelli Good and Ainsley Breaux.

The Cajuns spent most of the first half on the Lady Techsters’ side of the field. Louisiana Tech starting goalkeeper Jade Berbert (0-1) stopped six Cajuns shots, while UL Lafayette freshman goalie Kristen Malen did not face a Lady Techster shot the entire period.

Sophomore midfielder and Columbia, Ill., native Meghan Crawford, playing in her first match of the season, scored her first career goal as a collegian, unassisted, in the 49th minute to increase the Cajuns’ lead to 2-0.

Good added her second goal of the season in the 58th minute off helpers from Mette Olesen and Clemensen to extend the Cajuns lead to 3-0.

Olesen added an unassisted goal of her own 12 minutes later, followed by Clemensen’s second goal of the night to put the match out of reach.

Sophomore midfielder and Troy, Ill., native Melissa Barger scored her first goal of the season with a helper from Stephanie Lynch to give the Cajuns the decisive 6-0 victory.

The Cajuns’ 37 shots set a new school record. UL Lafayette’s previous school record was 35 shots, set against Nicholls State in 2002. The Cajuns’ seven assists also set a team record, previously set against Jackson State (four assists) last season.

Louisiana freshman goalkeeper Kristen Malen (2-1-0) received the victory for the Cajuns. Malen played 65-plus minutes in goal, facing no shots.

Louisiana will face Mississippi Valley State in a 1 p.m. match at Cajun Field to close out the 2004 McAlister’s Deli South Louisiana Shootout.

LOUISIANA La. — It wasn’t quite as easy as Friday night, but Louisiana’s soccer team tossed its second straight shutout here Sunday in what amounted to the championship game of the McAlister’s Deli South Louisiana Shootout at Cajun Field.

The Cajuns got a late first-half goal after several squandered early chances, added a match-clincher with 16 minutes left and played solid defense throughout in a 2-0 victory over Mississippi Valley to finish at 2-0 in the weekend event.

It was that defense that was the most pleasing to Cajun head coach Dave Poggi, whose team gave up only six shots to Mississippi Valley after holding Louisiana Tech to only one shot in a 6-0 laugher Friday night.

“They (MVSU) had a couple of chances,” Poggi said, “but (goalie) Kristen (Malen) didn’t really get tested. They had one go over and she got a finger on the only other one.

“What we did was limit their chances, and that will keep you in games. We started winning balls at midfield, and that set the tone for the match.”

The Cajuns (3-2-1) finished as champions of the four-team, two-site inaugural event. Runner-up Mississippi Valley (1-3) split its two matches after beating McNeese State in Lake Charles Friday, and the Cowgirls downed Tech 3-0 Sunday in Lake Charles to finish third.

UL has won its last two matches at “The Swamp” by a combined score of 8-0

LOUISIANA La. – After the threat of Hurricane Ivan forced the postponement of Friday’s match at Southern Miss, Louisiana’s Lady Cajuns soccer team returns to action Sunday in a 1 p.m. match here at Cajun Field against Southland Conference foe Nicholls State.

Louisiana (3-2-1) enters Sunday’s match winners of three of its last four matches, including two straight at “The Swamp”. In their first two matches at home this season, the Cajuns have held opponents scoreless in 180 minutes, outscoring the opposition 8-0.

Last weekend, UL won the 2004 McAlister’s Deli South Louisiana Shootout title.

Sophomore midfielder Rose Clemensen was named tournament MVP, while teammates Lyndsey Winters, Taunya Geelhoed, and Mette Olesen were also named to the all-tournament team.

Nicholls State (1-4-0) had its match at the University of Mobile this past Tuesday also postponed due to Ivan. Prior to the scheduled match, the Colonels were victorious 2-0 over Jackson State on Sept. 10.

Following Sunday’s match against the Colonels, Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns return to action Friday, Sept. 24, when they travel to Stillwater, Okla., to face Big 12 Conference member Oklahoma State (6-1-1) at 7 p.m.

LAdy Cajuns blank Nicholls; defense remains stout

LOUISIANA La. — University of Louisiana’s LAdy Cajuns soccer team missed on some easy goal opportunities in the first 10 minutes of its Sunday match against Nicholls State.

But when the goals started, they came in a flood.

The LAdy Cajuns scored three times in an eight-minute period and had the match completely under control by the mid-point of the first half, coasting home with a 5-0 whitewash of the outgunned Lady Colonels at Cajun Field.

Taunya Geelhoed, Lotte Rasmussen and Melissa Barger each had goals in the early blitz, the middle one coming on Rasmussen’s penalty kick and the others on picture-perfect passes from Mette Olesen that set up header goals.

The Cajuns (4-2-1) also were stifling on the defensive end, not allowing Nicholls (1-5-0) a single shot during the game.

“I was really happy with the way we played the first 20 minutes,” said Cajun coach Dave Poggi. “We were sharp, we were keeping and moving the ball and we penetrated when we had situations.

“There were a number of good chances that we missed, but we kept doing some of the things we’d been working on in practice.”

I would just like to congratulate our women's soccer team for getting off to such a great start this season (4-2-1 I believe). I saw a couple of the game last year, and I think they are remarkable improved from last year. I think we should try and get a big crowd at the last game this season to show these girls that we notice, we care, and they matter to us. Geaux Cajuns!
