UL begins three-match road trip Friday

STILLWATER, Okla. – Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns will face their toughest non-conference opponent of the season when they take on defending Big 12 Conference tournament champion Oklahoma State here Friday in a 7 p.m. match at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.

Louisiana (4-2-1) enters Friday’s contest riding a three-match winning streak which includes three home shutouts against Louisiana Tech, Mississippi Valley State and Nicholls State.

Oklahoma State (7-0-1) has a 12-match home unbeaten streak on the line dating back to November 1, 2002, entering Friday night’s non-conference affair.

In their last meeting during the 2002 season, the Cowgirls handed the Cajuns a 2-0 loss in Stillwater.

Through seven matches this season, the Cajuns are led by sophomore midfielder Rose Clemensen and freshman goalkeeper Kristen Malen. Clemensen leads all Cajun scorers with eight points (three goals, two assists), while Malen (4-1-1) has allowed only three goals in 500-plus minutes between the posts.

Following Friday’s match against the Cowgirls, Louisiana will travel to Tulsa, Okla., to face the Golden Hurricane of the University of Tulsa in a 10 a.m. match. The Cajuns will close out their three-match road trip Friday, Oct. 1, when they open Sun Belt Conference play at South Alabama.

MOBILE, Ala. – Louisiana’s LAdy Cajuns soccer team will look for its first-ever Sun Belt Conference opening win here Friday when it faces the South Alabama Jaguars in a 7 p.m. match at the Cage.

Louisiana (4-4-1) enters Friday night’s match on a two-match losing streak, while South Alabama (6-2) has won five of its last six matches.

Last weekend, UL dropped a 6-1 decision at defending Big 12 Conference tournament champion Oklahoma State on Friday and a 2-1 overtime heartbreaker at Tulsa.


Colleen Henry scored the Cajuns’ only goal against the Cowgirls, while Lotte Rasmussen tallied the equalizer that ultimately sent the match against the Golden Hurricane to overtime.

The Cajuns are 0-3-1 all-time against the Jaguars. The Cajuns have scored only one goal in their four meetings, with the lone goal coming from Melissa Barger in last season’s 3-1 loss at Cajun Field.

UL is 4-10-2 in Sun Belt Conference road matches.

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns return to action Thursday, Oct. 7, when they host Oral Roberts at Cajun Field in the final non-conference match of the season. Match time is set for 7 p.m.

Louisiana returns to Sun Belt Conference play Sunday against Florida International at Cajun Field

LOUISIANA La. – Louisiana’s Lady Cajun soccer team will host Oral Roberts University in its final non-conference match of the season here Thursday at Cajun Field. Match time is set for 7 p.m.

Louisiana (4-4-2, 1-0 Sun Belt) enters the mid-week match on a three-match winless streak. In their last match, the Cajuns tied 1-1 with South Alabama in their Sun Belt Conference opener.

The Lady Cajuns are 3-0 at Cajun Field this season, having outscored their opponents 13-0. UL Lafayette has held four of their last six opponents at Cajun Field scoreless.

The last time an opponent scored against the Cajuns at Cajun Field was Middle Tennessee on Nov. 2, 2003. The Blue Raiders defeated the Cajuns 4-0.

Oral Roberts (8-3, 1-0 Mid-Con), ranked 14th in the latest Soccer Buzz Central Region poll, has posted seven shutouts in 2004. The Golden Eagles have won their last two matches, including a decisive 4-0 victory over Southern Utah on Oct. 3.

In their only meeting, UL defeated the Golden Eagles 2-1 in Tulsa, Okla., in 2002.

Following Thursday night’s match, Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns will return to action Sunday when they host Sun Belt Conference foe Florida International in a 12 p.m. match at Cajun Field.

University of Louisiana wins two straight matches over FIU

LOUISIANA La. – Sherryl Owens’ header in the 64th minute was the difference as Louisiana’s Lady Cajuns soccer team defeated Florida International 2-0 here Sunday in a physical match plagued by intermittent rain at Cajun Field.

The goal by Owens, which was the first of the season and only the second of her career, also snapped the Cajuns’ 200-plus minute scoreless draught dating back to the Cajuns’ 1-1 tie at South Alabama on Oct. 1.

Freshman Kristina Nadolski’s goal in the 83rd minute added insurance and gave the Cajuns’ the decisive victory.

“Kristina’s goal gave us some breathing room and those are the kind of goals that a good team scores to salt away a victory,” Louisiana head coach Dave Poggi said.

Freshman Mette Olesen assisted on both goals to increase her season total to six.

“Mette created opportunities for us today and picked up the workload which was a big reason for our success today,” Poggi said.

UL (5-5-2, 1-0-1 Sun Belt) held the Golden Panthers (4-8-0, 2-2-0 Sun Belt) scoreless in the first half. The Cajuns have held four of their five opponents scoreless at Cajun Field this season.

“I thought Sherryl Owens did a great job shutting down Janessa Taddei (FIU #10). Sherryl blanketed her the entire match and didn’t give her very many chances to create opportunities (for FIU).

“Sherryl’s play was key,” Poggi added. “We also put better pressure on FIU than we did against Oral Roberts on Thursday. By doing that, we disrupted their (FIU’s) flow.”

The win improves the Cajuns’ 2004 season home record to 4-1, which is their best single-season home record in school history. Sunday’s match was also the last home match at Cajun Field this season. A scheduling conflict Homecoming weekend has forced two home matches to be moved to Lake Charles.

FIU was issued three yellow cards during the match, including two issued in a four-minute span in the second half. UL Lafayette was also issued a yellow card in the second half.

“Conference matches at this stage of the season are crucial,” Poggi continued. “If you don’t show up to play, you have no chance of winning.”

“The conference race is really becoming interesting,” Poggi said. “It looks as if it will come down to the wire and we have to prepare ourselves for this weekend’s trip to Arkansas.”

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns return to action Friday, Oct. 15, when they travel to Jonesboro, Ark., to face Arkansas State in a 4 p.m. Sun Belt Conference match.

Louisiana ties school record for most wins in a season

JONESBORO, Ark. – The Sun Belt Conference’s first place Louisiana’s Lady Cajuns soccer team used two goals from its “Danish Duo” of Rose Clemensen and Lotte Rasmussen en route to a 2-0 victory over Arkansas State here Friday afternoon at Indian Soccer Park.

Freshman and fellow countrywoman Mette Olesen added an assist in the victory. With the win, Louisiana (6-5-2, 2-0-1 Sun Belt) remained undefeated in conference action and also tied a school record for most wins in a season.

The win is the Cajuns’ first over Arkansas State (4-10-0, 1-4-0 Sun Belt) in Jonesboro and their first victory in the series in three seasons. The Cajuns have now won back-to-back conference matches for the first time since 2002.

In the 37th minute, Rasmussen scored her fourth goal of the season off a penalty kick to give the Cajuns a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Thirty-four minutes later, Clemensen also scored her fourth goal of the season with a helper from Olesen to give UL Lafayette the resulting 2-0 advantage.

“We are getting better at figuring out ways to create opportunities for ourselves,” UL head coach Dave Poggi said. “They (Lotte, Rose and Mette) went on the stat sheet, but I think it is equally important who created those chances and how.

“Meredith Smith played well for us in the second half,” Poggi continued. “She was able to get us the ball in different situations to keep our attack going.”

The physical match was plagued by fouls and yellow cards. In all, there were 62 fouls called – 31 on each team – and seven yellow cards were issued, six in the first half. Clemensen, Smith and Kristina Nadolski were issued yellow cards for the Cajuns.

“Our bench play I think was key for us tonight,” Poggi added. “We got good minutes from Kelli (Good), Kerri (Luyties) and Lyndsey (Winters). I think the second half was better for us.

“Arkansas State wasn’t a very dangerous team in the second half, but they are a scrappy team that works really hard,” Poggi commented. “With Taunya (Geelhoed) and Sherryl (Owens) playing in back for us, we were able to keep the Indians in check. They are a very difficult team to play at home and I am very please with the outcome.”

Louisiana’s Lady Cajuns will travel to Little Rock, Ark., to face Arkansas-Little Rock (1-12, 0-5 Sun Belt) in a 1 p.m. match Sunday.

CAJUNS BREAK SCHOOL RECORD FOR WINS
Louisiana improves to 3-0-1 in Sun Belt play, remains in first place

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – It wasn’t easy, but Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns came back from a one-goal deficit behind another strong performance from the “Danish Duo” to defeat the Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans 2-1 in double overtime here Sunday at the Burns Park Soccer Complex.

The win sets a new school record for most wins in a season for Louisiana (7-5-1, 3-0-1 Sun Belt), while also keeping the Cajuns in first place atop the conference standings. UALR falls to 1-13-1 overall and 0-6 in Sun Belt play.

The overtime win was also the Lady Cajuns’ first extra-period victory in four attempts.

“This was a difficult weekend for us,” UL head coach Dave Poggi said. “We came from behind and won today and I think it showed a lot of spirit and commitment.”

After a scoreless first half, UALR struck first in the second half on an Elena Esquibel penalty kick in the 62nd minute to give the Trojans a 1-0 advantage.

“UALR was unlucky today,” Poggi continued. “They had opportunities to score and they didn’t capitalize, but so did we.”

Sophomore midfielder and 2003 NAIA All-American Rose Clemensen tallied the equalizer in the 77th minute with a helper from Lotte Rasmussen. Clemensen’s fifth goal of the season ultimately sent the match into overtime.

In the first extra period, the teams remained knotted 1-1, sending the match to a second overtime. In the second overtime, it was Rasmussen’s fifth goal of the season that gave the Cajuns the 2-1 victory. Clemensen and Kelli Good combined on the assist.

“We had chances to put it away in the second half and couldn’t do it. Fortunately we did in the second overtime to win it.”

Each team attempted 12 shots during the match. Louisiana had five shots on goal, while UALR had six.

Arkansas-Little Rock was called for 25 fouls, including three yellow cards. The Cajuns were whistled for nine fouls.

“We have two matches coming up in Lake Charles, followed by two road matches,” Poggi added. “We have a lot of work to do until the conference tournament.”

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns will close out their “home” schedule in a Sun Belt Conference weekend set in Lake Charles. The Cajuns will face North Texas Friday, Oct. 22, at 3 p.m. and Denver Sunday, Oct. 24, at 1 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex on the campus of McNeese State University.

Louisiana freshman tallied two match-winning goals over the weekend

LOUISIANA La. - Louisiana's Lady Cajuns soccer freshman midfielder Lotte Rasmussen was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Rasmussen is the first Cajun in over a year to receive the honor. Tiffany Garber was the last Cajun to be named Sun Belt Player of the Week on Sept. 16, 2003.

Rasmussen, a native of Holstebro, Denmark, tallied two match-winning goals during the Cajuns' weekend sweep of Arkansas State and Arkansas-Little Rock. The victories moved Louisiana-Lafayette (7-5-2, 3-0-1 Sun Belt) into first place atop the Sun Belt standings.

Rasmussen now leads all Cajun players with five goals and is second on the team in total points with 12.

In Friday's 2-0 win over Arkansas State, Rasmussen scored the first Cajuns goal of the match. She later assisted on the Cajuns' second goal of the match.

On Sunday, Rasmussen scored the match winner in the second overtime to give UL Lafayette the 2-1 victory over UALR. Rasmussen's fifth goal of the season gave the Cajuns their seventh victory of the season, which broke the school record for single-season wins.

Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns return to action Friday to host North Texas in a 3 p.m. Sun Belt match at the McNeese State Cowgirl Soccer Complex in Lake Charles.

LAKE CHARLES – Louisiana’s Lady Cajuns soccer team faces one of its toughest tests of the 2004 season here Friday with a Sun Belt Conference match-up against North Texas. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m. at the McNeese State Cowgirl Soccer Complex.

North Texas (10-4-1, 3-1-1 Sun Belt) holds a 4-0 advantage in the all-time series over Louisiana-Lafayette (7-5-2, 3-0-1 Sun Belt).

The Cajuns enter Friday’s match on a three-match winning streak, while the Mean Green is unbeaten in six of its last seven matches.

Last weekend, the Cajuns used two match-winning goals from the Sun Belt Player of the Week Lotte Rasmussen to stay unbeaten in conference action. UL Lafayette defeated Arkansas State 2-0 Friday and Arkansas-Little Rock 2-1 in double overtime on Sunday.

Following Friday’s match with North Texas, Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns will close out its “home” schedule Sunday against three-time defending Sun Belt Conference champion Denver in a 1 p.m. match in Lake Charles. Before the match, UL Lafayette will recognize Sherryl Owens, Courtney Kelly and Natalie Hanks during Senior Day festivities.

Louisiana is 2-0-1 this season on the road in conference play

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Louisiana’s Lady Cajuns soccer team will face its toughest conference road test in the 2004 season finale with a 2 p.m. match against the Sun Belt Conference first place Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders here Sunday at the Blue Raider Soccer Field.

With a win Sunday, the Cajuns could finish as high as fourth in the Sun Belt. A loss could drop the Cajuns as low as sixth heading into the conference tournament next week.

Louisiana (7-8-2, 3-3-1 Sun Belt) saw its three-match conference road unbeaten streak come to an end Friday with a 3-1 loss at Western Kentucky. Sophomore midfielder Rose Clemensen tallied her team-high sixth goal of the season for the Cajuns.

Meanwhile, Middle Tennessee (11-4-1, 5-1-1 Sun Belt) could clinch at least a share of the Sun Belt Conference regular season crown Sunday. The Blue Raiders exploded for five first-half goals Friday in their 5-1 victory over South Alabama.

UL is 2-2 all-time against Middle Tennessee. After a scoreless first half in last season’s meeting in the Swamp, the Blue Raiders scored four second half goals en route to a 4-0 win over the Cajuns.

Following Sunday’s match against Middle Tennessee, Louisiana’s Lady Cajuns will prepare for the 2004 Aeropostale Sun Belt Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament, which will be held November 3-6 in Miami, Fla., on the campus of Florida International University.

MIAMI – Three-time defending Sun Belt Conference Tournament champion Denver ended Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns women’s soccer team’s season, handing the Cajuns a 1-0 defeat here Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the 2004 Aéropostale Sun Belt Conference Women’s Soccer Championships at FIU University Park.
