Thread: Name Game trademarking UL (SC court case)

Default Name Game trademarking UL (SC court case)

Court won't get into 'real' USC battle

The Supreme Court won't decide who really owns the initials ''SC'' when it comes to college sports: the University of Southern California or the University of South Carolina. The high court on Monday refused to hear an appeal from South Carolina, which wanted to trademark a baseball cap logo with the initials ''SC.''

The Trojans already have a trademark on a version of ''SC'' and say the Gamecocks' symbol looks too much like theirs. The California school says it has sold tens of millions of dollars of apparel with ''SC'' on it, while South Carolina only wanted to start using those initials on baseball caps in 1997.

Courts have rejected South Carolina's trademark.

The case is University of South Carolina v. University of Southern California, 09-1270.

No one university owns certain initials.

I've seen the TM (Trade Mark) initials after UL on some caps. Wonder if we actually have UL trade marked and if we own the exclusive rights to it.

Are you sure? I have only seen Louisville use the old English L as their logo. Maybe we should do like Michigan "M" or Tennesse "T" and go with Louisiana "L" with the state of Louisiana as a shadow. No mistaking that for Louisiana.

I think we should threaten to change or name to Louisiana's Southern University if LSU doesn't allow us the UL tag.

see how there baseball caps dont have anything close to UL...

no confusion there. they dont even use the initials UL. they use U of L. everything with the school initials has the word "of" in between them. so, why on Earth cant we use UL?

anyone got the answer on that?? (besides the fact that Baton Rouge gets to tell us what we can and cannot call our selves...)

They may have since abandoned it, but were still using it when Martin Hall failed to do the proper research and grabbed it.

More people across the country associate UL with Louisville than they do with Louisiana. The same is true of Sourthern Cal being known as USC while South Carolina is, well, South Carolina. I think we'd be better served by promoting our name as "Louisiana" and give up on UL as our moniker. We will never replace Louisville as UL in the minds of most across the nation. In fact, it is what makes so many people feel like they must include a third L when they refer to us so that people will know who they're talking about.

People, just use "LOUISIANA" when talking about our beloved university.

There is no reason to fight unnecessary, unwinnable battles.
