Thread: Stars come out to play in Mitchell, Wallace outing

  1. UL Golf Stars come out to play in Mitchell, Wallace outing

LOUISIANA La. — A veritable “who’s who” in Acadiana professional sports will eat and socialize heartily Sunday and tee it up Monday for a trio of charitable causes.

It’s all a part of the fourth annual Brian Mitchell & Donnie Wallace Celebrity Golf Outing, an event that spans two days and will raise funds for the UL Football Quarterback Club, the Joshua Houses of Acadiana Outreach and Stuller Place.

It’s also the next incarnation of an idea that Wallace and Mitchell, both former Ragin’ Cajun quarterbacks who have gone on to success in different professional sports, began discussing several years ago.

“This is something we wanted to do to give back to the area,” said Wallace, director of the PGA Tour’s ShotLink field operations. “We’ve dubbed this year’s tournament ‘Giving Back’ because that’s what it’s all about.”

Mitchell, the NFL’s all-time career leader in kick return yardage, will team with Wallace to host the event scheduled for noon Monday at Le Triomphe Golf Club. A pre-tournament kickoff party is scheduled from 7-10 p.m. Sunday at Tsunami in Lafayette.

Turbo-Chem is the presenting sponsor for an event that will include among its participants ex-NBA star and current TNT commentator Charles Barkley, former New Orleans Saints Eric Martin, Tyrone Hughes and Dalton Hilliard and more than a dozen athletic standouts with local ties.

That group includes current and retired NFL standouts Jake Delhomme, Brandon Stokley, Kevin Faulk, Orlando Thomas, Javon Walker, Johnny Hector, Anthony McFarland, Keenan McCardell, Corey Raymond, Wade Richey and Trev Faulk.

Two-time Olympic high jump medalist and recent Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame inductee Hollis Conway and ex-Philadelphia 76er Joe Ward are also scheduled to take part.

“We’ve been really successful in the past in getting a lot of our friends to come in and take part,” Wallace said, “but this year has just blown me away. It’s very fulfilling that so many of our friends are ready to step up and help out.”

Did anyone make it to Tsunami's? Curious to know how it went.

Scott Brazda's researcher at the UL Spring Football banquet didn't know it, and neither does most of the media. Brian Mitchell is the NFL's all-time career yardage leader PERIOD. Jerry Rice is second.
