Thread: Marlin Madness Begins November 12th in the Cajun Dome

I would love to have a sell out, but as has been mentioned before, the Cajun Dome has never been sold out for a UL Basketball game. However, even if we can get just 7,000-7,500 that would be great and the Cajun Dome would rock. 7,000+ will virtually fill up the entire 1st and 2nd levels. Anytime that has happend in the past the atmosphere has been great and the Dome has rocked. I love the fact that Turbine is shooting for the moon, but if we just make it to the clouds that wouldn't be a bad thing!

How about football season ticket holders get in free for 1st home game of the year.

I hate to say it but basketball attendance has always been bad at the beginning of the year so don't expect 6-7,000 fans for the first game. Even when we have had some "name" teams come in we never got good attendance. However if we start winning again we will get 6-7,000 easily by the end of the season.

They said that it couldn't be done. So don't even try.

Some talk about people who see the glass half empty vs. half full. Just why are expectations so low? Are we doomed to repeat history or can we see beyond the box that we are currently in? And, just why are we in that box to begin with? What is it about Lafayette and the Acadiana area that it can't better support UL? Ole Miss is about the size of UL, but is in a small town the size of Abbeville, yet gets 60,000 a game in football and over 10,000 a game in basketball. We can't consistently average 25,000 in football and 8,000 in basketball. Is it our conference affiliation and the lack of playing name teams each week? We get 43,000 for Southern and 38,000 for McNeese, but only 15,000 - 18,000 for K State, Houston and Tulane and that doesn't make sense. Is it the university's poor marketing? Is it our years of futility in not winning? Is it a poor game-day experience that won't draw repeat fans? Even in the Bo Lamar days, I don't believe we consistently filled Blackham. Is it that our fans still think of UL as a small, regional college that cannot achieve major college status? Is it that most of Lafayette simply supports LSU and could care less about UL? Lafayette should be a great college town, yet shows little support for its home-town university. It is not like UL is competing with an entertainment mecca for the average fan. Winning, improved facilities and increased private donations through the RCAF should certainly change things as our new administration is starting to emphasize the importance of athletics as the window to the world of the university. But, there is still a disconnect between the athletic department and the local community. We all here point out all of the problems that need to be addressed and are urged to continuously write to our AD and Asst. AD. When you really think about it, it is pretty rediculous that so much of the obvious goes undetected, something you just don't see at major universities. You would think that with all of the road games we play vs. BCS schools, our people would pick up and implement some ideas as to why these schools excel and what we could do to achieve their level of success and support. Even our most loyal supporters on this board have high hopes but low expectations. A paradigm shift is urgently needed.

In Bo Lamar's junior and senior year, Blackham was filled for every single game. I know because I was there for some of them.

I have been a Cajuns fan of every sport all my life and remember in my younger years that UL basketball used to have like a pre-game party under the covered entrance before each weekend home game. Bands played outside, beer trucks outside, basketball goals set up outside for shooting competitions and for fun for the kids. I remember having quite good crowds then and I must have been in pre-teen or early teen years. Why not have UPC and the university try something like that. And I kinda like the "marlin madness" thing... Football used "Bustle Up" for the first couple years... I can't wait for basketball, after football is done of course.

I was there for all of them. We filled it up for big games like Houston, LA Tech or NIT games, but I don't believe average attendance was a sellout. That said, I haven't checked the record books.

But even with that at Blackham, wouldn't that be between 6 & 7,000. Would they have filled the Cajundome? It wasn't too too long ago when we did average over 5k for cnference games, maybe even cose to 6k.

Winning with style will bring them in and I believe we will have the winning style!
