Thread: Would you support a change

  1. Ragin' Cajuns Would you support a change

Being in the sales world I come across many USL (not UL or ULL) grads and even the occasional USL grad with a family member that is an SLI or SLII grad. It is pretty much a unanimous decision that they all wish the school was still USL; as do I. But, I am not here to open that can of worms. The can I am looking for has do with our mascot. I just cannot seem to accept the flaming pepper as a mascot. Our marketing is already bad enough since we use more than two colors, that darn pepper doesn't help any. I would like to start a petition to bring back the bulldog as the mascot. We would still be the UL Ragin Cajuns but the bulldog would become our mascot and we could burn that pepper outfit at halftime one game. Feel free to comment but a simple yes or no would do. The only way I know to start this would be on facebook or here and once we had a significant number of people who agree we submit our findings to Savoie and Farmer and anyone else. I realize it may be a lost cause or a long endeavor but it is one I think is worth it. Does anyone agree?

Well at least we agree no pepper. I think crawfish would be a bad idea, I have seen some ____ty crawfish outfits lol. The main reason I say bulldog is because we have a good history with it.

Look at UL's Marketing Staff and count the years of marketing experience they had before being hired for (or promoted to) their current position at UL. Jim Abbott could count them up on his right hand. The same could be said for the Event Management staff.

I was speaking to a couple guys on Saturday while tailgating, both in their 60s, one a UL Alum, the other a 30+ year Professor at UL. In a quick glance around us, we saw at least 4-5 different UL logo's (and that doesn't count the various garbage purchased from stores like Academy), and also noted it the various colors used.

It's time this University starts doing a little outsourcing to some people who know what they're doing. You've got to do the simple things right.

I agree the flaming pepper seems to have fizzled out. I would be in favor of a Catahoula Houndog for a mascot. We could name him Roux!

I like that, anything but the pepper. May part two could be a voting on whether to go bulldog or cata. I agree with the name Roux.

That is the state dog and your suggestion may have been one of the best that I have ever heard on this forum. Not only would it cement UL as a state school and not regional to have the state dog as the mascot but probably no other schools have that dog as a mascot.

I never had a problem with the old cajun mascot from the 80's even though he wasn't very politically correct, but it seem I heard a lot of the same discussion about him as I do about the pepper today, and I'm sure that any mascot would have similar discussion. Of course it could be worse hotty and toddy could be on our proposed mascot names

<< The King of the stock dog breeds, most enduring... stamina is their middle name... CATAHOULAS outwork and outfight all other breeds of stock dogs when protecting their master, livestock, and property. They are the largest and most aggressive of the cattle dogs, bred to handle wild cattle and hogs in the roughest, most remote country. Catahoulas will also hunt coon, bear, or whatever else they are introduced to.

Catahoulas are bred to go and find livestock in swamps, hilly canyons, thickets or forests, or mountains. >>

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catahoula_Leopard_Dog

<< Catahoulas are highly intelligent, energetic, have a high pain tolerance and are very quick, yet they are also very loving and gentle with children they know or have adopted, and their family (pack). They are extremely versatile and have been used in search and rescue, hunting, herding and agility. This breed is also renowned for their ability to tree raccoons, many Catahoulas can actually climb trees, aided by their long, hard, sharp nails which help them grip the bark. >>

    THIS DOG IS FREAKIN' SUPERMAN

<< One theory as to the origins of the breed states that the Catahoula is thought to have descended from "war dogs" (Mastiffs and Greyhounds) brought to Louisiana by Hernando de Soto in the 16th century. In the 1800s, French settlers arrived in Louisiana with their Beauceron. They told of strange looking dogs with haunting glass eyes that were used by the Indians to hunt game in the swamp.[13] It is thought the Beauceron and Red Wolf/war dog were interbred to produce the Catahoula. >>

<< Jim Bowie and brother Rezin Bowie, who spent much of their youth in Catahoula Parish are reported to have owned a pair of Catahoulas. It was said that they would sleep with a Catahoula at their feet.[14][15] During the early 1900s, Teddy Roosevelt used the Catahoula when hunting. Louisiana Governor Earl K. Long had an interest in the breed and collected them.[15]
In 1979, Governor Edwin Edwards signed a bill making the Catahoula the official state dog of Louisiana in recognition of their importance in the history of the region. >>

Now, I defy anyone to come up with a better mascot for THE UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA.

I agree, it has nice state branding and is a new change that people can get behind.

If I remember correctly the Flaming Pepper (among the kindest of terms I've heard used to describe it) wa designed by a professional firm (from New York, I believe). I believe they also came up with the hot wheels logo and the pointy font used on the lettering for "Ragin Cajuns" and the uniform numbers. When the pepper and the uniform numbers were met with derision and calls for change I recall the response was that too large of an investment had been made to just drop it. It took some doing just to modify the numbering so that player numbers on the jerseys could be more easily identified. At least that is how I remember it. Maybe someone else can correct me or add more.
