TUCSON — Louisiana third baseman Danyele Gomez has come through in the clutch before, but the Ragin’ Cajuns really needed her seventh inning double Thursday.
After not having a substantial scoring threat against South Carolina (27-23) in opening round action of the NCAA Regional I, Gomez prevailed for a game-winning double in the Cajuns’ 1-0 victory.
Gomez hit a liner past the left fielder to score Holly Tankersley as the Cajuns advanced to today’s second-round action against host Arizona at Hilenbrand Stadium.
Arizona, the No. 1 national seed, came back to edge Centenary 2-1 in its Thursday opener.
“I was glad to see Danyele coming up because she is a clutch hitter,” UL co-head coach Stefni Lotief said. “She is the come-through kid.”
South Carolina pitcher Stacey Johnson was holding the Cajuns (56-6) at bay, limiting them to seven hits. She had two outs in the top of the seventh before walking Tankersley.
Gomez, who also had two errors in the game, came through with a hard shot over McKenna Hughes, who had made a diving grab of a Brittany Bryant ball an inning earlier.
