Tourney on hold again Cajuns finish off win, but must now wait to complete second game today.

LOUISIANA La. — There were numerous suggestions Friday as to how best to re-name this weekend’s Sun Belt Conference Softball Tournament, which has twice been washed out by torrential rains at Ragin’ Cajun Softball Park.

The first new label is easy enough. Just call in the Rain Belt Conference Softball Tournament, because sun has been in short supply thus far.

Another alternative is the Sun Belt Conference Swim Meet, complete with bats, gloves and glow-balls.

Host Louisiana took care of its business on Friday, completing a 7-0 victory over North Texas that was postponed by Thursday night’s showers.

And Middle Tennessee was able to record a 4-0 victory over Western Kentucky that eliminated the Hilltoppers from the event.

The tournament then ran into more trouble, and once again it was North Texas that had a game’s completion moved to the next day.

New Mexico State tallied three runs in the first inning and led UNT 3-0 midway through the fourth on Friday when weather once again turned bad, mirroring a 2-0 deficit when rains intervened Thursday night.

NMSU’s Aggies and the Mean Green will resume their elimination battle at 9 a.m. today, to be followed at 11 a.m. by a winner’s bracket meeting between No. 1 seed UL and No. 2 Florida International.

Middle Tennessee is set to play the NMSU-UNT winner at 1 p.m. to finish Friday’s schedule of games.

They will be followed by games at 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., if necessary, with the 5 p.m. game featuring the winner of the UL-FIU contest.
