LOUISIANA La. - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team and head coach Tony Robichaux have signed two more players for the 2005 season.
Chris Johns, a six-foot left-handed pitcher from Lamar Community College in Lamar, Colo., is the final pitcher to commit to the Ragin’ Cajuns. Johns was the 2004 Baseball America preseason National Junior College Pitcher of the Year after going 12-0 in 2003 as well as garnering All-American honors.
Johns, who will provide the Cajuns with experience from the left side, is having another outstanding season for Lamar, going 9-1 with a 2.52 ERA. He has 74 strikeouts in 75 innings with six shutouts and five complete games. In two years, Johns has a 21-1 mark on the mound.
The Cajuns also inked outfielder John McCarthy. The 6-2 left-hander was originally drafted out of high school by the Texas Rangers in the 28th round of the 2002 MLB Draft. Originally from Chicago, McCarthy currently leads Mesa (Ariz.) Junior College with a .420 batting average.
He has driven in 52 runs for Mesa and has 18 doubles. He leads the state of Arizona with 86 hits and 54 runs scored and ranks third in the state in average.
“We are very excited to have players like Chris (Johns) and John (McCarthy) choose to play at UL,” Robichaux said. “Both should make an immediate impact on our program with their talent and experience and should be exciting for our fans to watch.”
