Thread: Running the ball on UGA

Default Running the ball on UGA

For all of you defenseive Guru's out there, Should we have an easier time running the ball on UGA's 3-4 than a typical 4-3 SEC defense? Seems like if we can spread them out, there should be some holes open up for the running game. Someone please enlighten me.

If the NT in the middle is a very physical presence, we can have just as much of a tough time running on them as we would a 4-3. Typically, you would be able to exploit some mismatches with a 3-4 in the running game as it is a defense designed to do a lot of blitzing and creating mismatches on the outside with their linebackers on your running backs in the pass rush. However, UGA is apparently very big and physical in their front 7 and their moving their best pass rusher and athlete from DE last year to OLB this year. Therefore, he will likely play the run well.

Also, in many formations at the line of scrimmage, a 3-4 scheme will actually set up and look just like a 4-3 except the rush linebacker may or may not be in a down position but still line up on the line. I doubt we would have any more success running in their new defensive scheme than we would have last year. However, I am fairly optimistic that we can move it a little on the ground. My main concern is that Bustles mentality and approach has often been very vanilla and conservative in these big games, especially against teams we know little about. When you figure that we have no film on their defense and how they run it, I imagine that we will come out very conservative early on and have a tough time moving the ball. I'm concerned because we can't afford to do that for very long.

We'll have to use the pass to set up the run. If we can utilize the play action, cause some confusion and bother the LB's, we can have some serious success on the ground, especially with delayed hand-offs and screens. It is paramount that we soften them up in the middle with an intermediate passing game, and take a few shots down the field. I think the coaching staff knows that, and will make it happen.

actually thats the game plan against a 4-3 defense. you use the polar opposite of that to play effectively against a 3-4 defense. you have to set up and maintain a decent running game in the A and B gaps to try and collapse the LB's in more to stop the run or have them bring in a safety in the box to assist.

Like Zeph said, its not a traditional 3 - 4. It's more of a flex 3 - 4 with a hybrid LB moving all around. The game plan will reflect that.

no doubt. but i believe beating this defense rides mainly on us establishing a solid running game, wether it be a traditional 3-4 or flex 3-4.

Totally agree, the ground game is the key to the upset.

I have a bad feeling with their superb offsenive line that they will be pounding it down our throats to keep it vanilla for them. It will be a pounding that will just wear us down quickly.

1 fumble would change that. 1 botched snap. 1 blocked kick.

    It's that simple folks.
