Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team opens its home schedule hosting the 2010 Ragin' Cajuns Invitational at Earl K. Long Gym on Friday, Sept. 3 and Saturday, Sept. 4.
UL (3-1) welcomes Houston Baptist, Jackson State and Nicholls State to E.K. Long Gym. The tournament starts Friday with a Noon first serve when Louisiana meets Houston Baptist. Later in the evening, the Cajuns face Jackson State at 7 p.m.

Saturday's action will conclude with the final match of the tournament when UL takes on in-state foe Nicholls State at 3 p.m.

"This tournament has been a mainstay for the volleyball program for many years," said UL head coach Heather Mazeitis about the return of the tournament after a two-year hiatus. "It's nice to have an early home match so that our faculty, fans and students can come out and watch us play."

The Ragin' Cajuns are coming off a strong showing at the Comfort Suites SHSU Invitational during the season-opening weekend, posting a 3-1 record with wins over Marist (3-1), Prairie View A&M (3-0) and Sam Houston State (3-2).

With a three set sweep of Prairie View A&M last Saturday, Mazeitis collected her 250th career victory.

"We look to carry on the consistent play that we had the weekend before," noted Mazeitis. "We did a really good job on defense and our blocking came alive later in the tournament. Our offense will become stronger as we gain more experience."

Lesley Mirarchi and Mandi Gavin were named to the Comfort Suites SHSU Invitational All-Tournament team for their outstanding performances.

Mirarchi notched a team-best 38 kills in four matches, averaging 2.38 kills per match. Her defense played a major factor as well as she notched nine block assists, for a total of 42.5 points.

Gavin entered this season as the Cajuns new setter and left the weekend with solid experience after collecting 148 assists, 13 total blocks and a team-high eight service aces in four matches. A weekend-best 48 assists were notched in the win over SHSU.

UL senior Lindsay Brown continued her rise in the record books by moving into fourth place all-time with 85 digs last weekend. The Yorba Linda Calif., native passed Annette Carney (1988-91), who set the mark of 1,313 career digs.

Brown reached the 30-dig plateau against Sam Houston for the first time since recording 32 against North Texas on Oct. 3, 2009. With the start of her fourth season, Brown has collected 1,370 digs during her career.
