You are right in that the NFL puts a ton of weight on the combine and how you do or don't do in it. But it still is a bit funny that a lineman might be okay if he ran a 40-yard dash in 4.6... but not if he did it in 4.8. That probably represents a 2 foot difference. Especially funny when you consider that he will never run an open 40 in a game.

But, unfortunately, that a tool they use to evaluate.

Davis needed a good combine because he did not have a very productive college career. I do agree with you on the 40 stuff. I have no idea how that is an important measurable.

im with you that there if far to much stock put into the combine, but unfortunately for someone like davis this is really his best and only chance to get noticed by pro-scouts.

with that said i think that for lineman the 3 cone, times in the 10 yard and 20 yard splits in the 40, and the 20 yard shuttle should be a better evaluation of explosiveness of a D-lineman. the only problem with davis running the 40 on the nfl website is that he didn't look very fast off of the line.

Is this an indictment on our DL coaches?

not at all from me. It is and indictment more on the work out center that he has be training at in baton rouge. before he left the UL weight program with Big Rob he was running around a 4.7 and repping 30 times. to regress slightly shows me that these specialty centers are not doing very much to improve there athletes

I asked Des. last year about the tests at the combine and their seemingly having much better results then our guys at UL had when on campus. He said that the purpose of training at UL was to win football games and the deal at the training camp was to do well at the combine---boy I wish we had more of him and his lil brother around our place!!!!!

I agree. It's not like Hall was a sack machine here at UL. As a matter of fact, I was quite disappointed in his last two years here as I thought he'd be looking at about 6-8 sacks per year at least. For his size and agility, I expected him to have more production.

It's hard for me to indict any of our football coaches as I know they do more with less than anybody else out there. However, we've not had a good DL in years and even since we've added a lot of size and athleticism to the DL over recent years, that has translated to little production. We have ends who don't seem to be able to get to the QB and this working on a tackle without any help most of the time. We have a DL that does little to stop the run and does little to plug up the blocking schemes of the OL that allows our Linebackers to fly around and make plays. Terrel Richardson is one of the better athletes at DE in the SBC and he probably doesn't have 10 career sacks and does little to disrupt the game. I would like to see us be able to disrupt the passing game a little more from the front 4 but it hasn't happened. Also, what is sort of ironic, Hall Davis' best game came against Ciron Black of LSU who many people thought was one of the top tackles in the country last year. It makes you wonder if its a focus or concentration or effort thing or that was just a good game.
