Louisiana claims Sun Belt title with sweep of WKU
LOUISIANA La. — Tiffany Grayson has only played in 29 of Louisian’s 54 softball games this season, but she grabbed the spotlight on Sunday at just the right time.
Her three-run home run in the middle game of an unusual tripleheader helped the Ragin’ Cajuns sweep Western Kentucky and remain unbeaten in Sun Belt Conference play.
A 9-2 victory began the day for UL, completing a game that got started on Saturday before rain washed out play. Then UL won 6-3 and 9-1 in Sunday’s scheduled doubleheader.
The Cajuns improved to 48-6 overall and 14-0 in the league, while WKU fell to 33-19, 8-7. The three wins also assured the Cajuns of their fourth straight Sun Belt regular season title.
It was in the middle game that Grayson came to the rescue.
WKU’s Jessie Richardson delivered a two-run home run off UL ace Brooke Mitchell in the sixth inning to give the Hilltoppers a 3-2 lead and force the Cajuns to regroup.
Lacey Bertucci started the UL sixth by reaching on an error, and pinch runner Christine Collins moved to second when another error put Crystal George aboard.
Joy Webre advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, and then Grayson unloaded a towering homer to left center field to put the Cajuns back on top 5-3.
A home run from Holly Tankersley completed the 6-3 win.
It was Senior Day at Ragin’ Cajun Softball Park, so a starring role for lone senior Grayson was a natural.
