LOUISIANA La. — Louisiana and Western Kentucky were just hitting their stride on Saturday when torrential rains swept across Ragin’ Cajun Softball Park and washed out the opener of a crucial four-game weekend series in the Sun Belt Conference.

The Cajuns will take a 3-1 lead into a noon resumption of play today, and then the two squads will meet in a doubleheader.

Earlier this season at New Mexico State, the final game of a four-game weekend was wiped out by rain and tight travel plans, and the Cajuns will miss another contest this weekend.

UL junior Brooke Mitchell was touched for a run in the top of the first inning on Saturday in her first action since taking a line drive to the forehead against Florida International on April 23, but her teammates quickly regained control of the contest.

Tiffany Hebert drew a leadoff walk and Holly Tankersley laced a double in the bottom of the frame as clouds began to build.

Two outs later, a wind shift brought strong gusts from the north to signal the imminent arrival of approaching rain.

Sophomore second baseman Brittany Bryant then hammered an Allison Silver pitch over the center field wall for a three-run home run and a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

But umpires saw lightning and called a halt to the action, just before the heavy rains began.
