While I do think Marlin is a HUGE step up over Lee, I think we actually got rid of our problem last month. We got rid of the laziest player with the poorest attitude. In saying that, I am happy to say goodbye Mr. Gradnigo.
As for this coming basketball season, I couldn't be more excited. I am very happy I suffered through the bad times and didn't get rid of my season tickets. Can't wait for Cajun hoops to be back in action!!!!!
Same here. Over the past 4 years or so i missed probably 2 home games. One was the mobile game this past year I had something i had to do and i said to myself well, it will either be a blowout or a close game. and i dont want to watch a close game if it's against mobile. I was lucky to miss that one. The other one was the year before that when Sam houston state came here and beat us at the last sec. I missed it b/c i was recovering from surgery. Other than those two games, i've never missed any of the other ones. Not trying to brag or say i'm better than any one else on here cause i'm not but i'm saying it will make it that much sweeter when we start winning.
I...LOVE...everyone's enthusiasm and optimism. I'm looking forward to the season also. But I'm going to inject a little reality to this season.
There are a lot of new players on this roster. They have to get use to a new system of play, just as the returning players do. Chris Gradnigo was not the only problem on the previous team and neither was Robert Lee. Most, but not all of the problems are gone. Wallace & Gary are coming off injury redshirts and time will tell how effective they may be. Daigle, Bureau and Batiste? I just don't know. I have no idea what to expect from them. The previous coaching staff did not have time to mess up Andrews and Mitchell, so I see them developing very well with hard work and dedication, but that takes time.
I am not doubting Bob Marlin and his staff. I want them to succeed and believe that they can. But I am not going to get overly excited about this season until I see this group of players look like a team, act like a team, be a team. If these seniors do not lead by example, that will put a great deal of the load on first and second year players. While they may be able to handle it, I'll have to see that first hand.
By the way, it's practically September. I wonder why the basketball schedules haven't been posted yet.
I think you're right. I don't think anybody here is expecting to see NCAA births or conference championships this week necessarily because if so, they'd be sort of insane. However, I do think that regardless of who he has on the roster, we can expect to see more exciting teams that are more disciplined and less frustrating to see. A fundamental team that plays hard collectively is always appreciated by fans and I think that Marlin will be able to get the most out of this bunch.
The thing i'm most excited about is seeing a team that has an actual offense and doing things other than running down the court and jacking up a three. While it is hard for a new coach to come in and have immediate success his first year i think we can do it for a few reasons. My biggest reason is new coaches usually take a couple of years or so to succeed b/c they have to bring in the type of players that fit their system. Marlin likes to have athletic players who play up tempo on his team and he already has those types of players.
You said you're not sure about Bureau, Daigle and Batiste. Why? Daigle is a good shooter and solid defender. Batiste is gonna be a beast this year IMO. remember he started basketball late (i think he only played 2 years of high school basketball) but he has the athleticism. I remember last year seeing him make some very nice defensive plays. Bureau is a best IF and WHEN he is healthy.
The biggest question this year is if those newcomers can come in and play well. If they can, then I wouldn't rule out a conference championship.
Even if we dont make it to the conference championship, we should at the very least see some quailty basketball and i dont know the last time we saw the cajuns play that.
Tentative schedule is set with 28 games. Only question remaining is do we stay at 28 or do we add one more game. From what I understand we have found a D1 team which may be willing to come here if we go there the following season. However we don't know if we would rather stay at 28 or take this deal. Decision should be made relatively soon and I bet we decide to stay at 28 in order to give us more flexibility next season.
