Thread: The 2004 Search for a Basketball Coach

This quote is from Coach Broussard's bio on the LSU website.

"He left Nicholls State with an overall record of 150-183 while putting together a 113-89 record in Southland Conference play."

I do not know Coach Broussard, but I do know that if the administration was considering any other coach in the country that had his record as a head coach, there would be a lynch mob forming for Nelson. No one knows if he even applied for the jobs. This discussion reminds me of when Coach Bustle was hired and everyone wanted Louis Cook to be hired. As it turned out, coach Cook did not even seek the job.

Let me educate you my man. The record means nothing. He had to play LSU , Auburn, Virginia, etc. to make money, and if you don't know Nicholls is not going to beat any of those schools if Bobby Knight is coaching them. Rickey Broussard is the only Coach in the History of Nicholls State to bring them to the N.C.A.A. tourney, TWICE, that's right twice. Guess what Crawfish, it will never happen again! Not as long as they have that facility. If he can win two at Nicholls he can win 4 at UL more that Jessie or Marty.

He will be more successful than both of them and I will be telling everybody I told you so. So throw away the record Crawfish. It means nothing.Secondly he wants the job, why do you think he left Nicholls to become an Asst. at LSU to better prepare his resume for UL his dream job. If you people only knew. He can Coach circles around Lee. He forgot more basketball than Lee knows. Opelousas High WoW!! I'm impressed.

I have nothing against this guy, but I stand by my statements. If any other coach applied with this record, he would not get any consideration from most Cajun fans. Working at LSU Baton Rouge then resigning under duress also has done nothing to improve his resume. I understand that he has many friends but friends do not win games. I hope we hire the best candidate for the job, regardless of whether he is a brother in law or buddy of some group of supporters. Nelson has done a great job recently in selecting coaches, I expect he will do just as well this time, whoever the person is that he selects. Whoever he hires, I will support wholeheartedly unless and until he proves he cannot do the job. (as I have in the past)

I respect your answer. Trust me when I tell you that Ricky can get the job done, and he would assemble a great staff.

Cyprien was the runner up for the Nicholl's State head coaching position in 2002.

    Crawfish,
Speaking to your last sentence let me tell you, I will no longer give one dime to this university. I hope that they run into so many problems with whomever they hire. We already know that the majority of the kids in the program now can barely spell there own names much less care about going to class. That is what the coach that just left gave us and is also what his assistants helped him get here. Maybe that is what they are looking for again. As far as I am concerned this university can go to hell and take Ray A. with it.

Maybe we can get a corporate sponsor to help ease the burdon of the loss of your contributions.

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark I mean UL athletics. Can someone intelligent and neutral give me some insight.
First the vote. is not even close to being an honest guage of his support or for that matter non support.

Second, the last time he wanted the job we had just fired a guy for haveing a losing record, and Ricky wanted us to take him after he had a losing season, a bad losing season. Now he wants us to hire him after getting canned at LSU while they are in a losing spiral.

Third what neutral? You are not, I am not. It is all opinion, and right now Ricky's supporters are massing attempting to project him as the populist hire.

I would not be happy with him as the guy coaching my team, but if hired will support him 100%, and never look back. I just hope we can do better.

Why is the vote not close to being accurate. I have told many of my friends to go and vote, isn't that what a poll is all about. You want to discredit the vote because you don't like the results.Guess what you are right when you say Ricky's supporters and there are lots of them (who don't even know this website exists) that are attempting to help him in whatever way they can, and it ____es off the people who are against him. The fact is he is the only candidate that has garnered so much support that the administration and people like you are trying everything in their power to squash it. None of the four candidates they have interviewed can do what Ricky can do. Raise money and put people in the stands. Why would a Sun Belt championship team only put 3,000 people in the stands. You know why! We should learn our lesson, the two most successful coaches in USL history are Tony Robichaux (Crowley) and Yvette Girouard (Broussard) and guess where Ricky's from (Maurice) By the way are u a freakin USL graduate. Don't you want to see one of us do well, wouldn't you want to contribute more to a local guy running the program. Don't you think he knows who to go and approach for contributions. You must be a McNeese grad! Last but not least the fact is he is the populist hire, just not yours!

  10. UL Basketball Schexnayder keeps his options open

LOUISIANA La. — UL athletic director Nelson Schexnayder is keeping his options open as he searches for the school’s next head basketball coach.

“I don’t have a timetable yet,” said Schexnayder, who has interviewed four main candidates for the position vacated by Jessie Evans’ departure for the University of San Francisco.

“I’ve tried to avoid setting a deadline. I’ve talked to some candidates, and I don’t know if we will talk to more. We’ve gone through the initial round of interviews, and I’d like to sit back and see where we go from here.

“Obviously, I’m hopeful that the decision can be reached sooner rather than later.”

Schexnayder maintained that none of the 28 candidates who have expressed interest have been excluded.

“I’ve talked to (president) Dr. (Ray) Authement,’’ he said. “Depending on his thoughts, we’ll see where we need to go next.

“We may interview more candidates and we may not.’’

No, I do not think this poll is accurate, but you are right, I don't know if it is or not. If you have ever taken statistics you would know this type of poll is not reliable. That was my point.

Sure Ricky has lots of supporters, heck he should. As you have stated he is from here and has many friends. I don't think he has 10k friends willing to plop down 10 bucks a game.

I am not attempting to squash anything. I have a right to an opinion. Your team has brougth up his name, I did not start a thread stating I was happy he had not had an interview. I suppose you would like to squash my opinion. I have not called Nelson or Doc and said do not interview this guy, but it appears your side has been lobbied for him from your comments.

You darn right we are lobbying for him because we know his abilities and what he can do for this univesity.
I guess the poll would be accurate if Coach Lee was winning it or Butch Pierre with 13 votes. The fans are speaking is Ray or Nelson listening? I GUESS NOT!

I have one other thing that is bothering me. Look at the four candidates. They are clones of one another. Can we get some variety to pick from. Just put their names in a hat and pick one! Come on Ray and Nelson, if you can't stand Ricky then find someone on that list that isn't a clone like those four. REALLY!
