North Texas 5, UL 1 (women)

Seventh-seeded North Texas quickly captured the doubles point and continued the momentum in a 5-1 victory over Louisiana Lady Cajuns Friday in women’s first-round action of the Sun Belt Conference Tennis Championships.

With the win, North Texas (13-9) advances to the 3 p.m. quarterfinal match against second-seeded Denver this afternoon, while 10th-seeded UL Lafayette (7-13) faces the loser of the Arkansas State-New Mexico State match in the ninth-place match at 2 p.m. today.

In doubles, reigning Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week Krysta Lee teamed up with Katherine Harris to down UL Lafayette’s freshman tandem of Kimmie Lyles and Cecilia Varela 8-2. In the other doubles match, Megan Schmulbach and Holly Lee defeated Susan Linden and Thais Bortoletto 8-5.

In singles, the Mean Green took four of the five singles matches to seal the victory. The lone point for the Cajuns came from Lyles, who extended her season-high winning streak to four matches in disposing of Harris 6-2, 6-2.
