Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns soccer team hits the road this weekend for the first time in Sun Belt play in 2010. The Cajuns travel to No.25 Denver for a Friday match-up with the Pioneers before traveling to Denton, Texas for a Sunday showdown with North Texas. The contest with Denver marks the Cajuns first against a ranked opponent in 2010.
The Cajuns and Pioneers kick-off at 8:00 p.m. CT at CIBER Field in Denver on Friday night. UL and North Texas kick-off at 1:00 p.m. at the Mean Green Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Cajuns (6-5-0, 1-1-0) are coming off of a weekend in which they split their first two Sun Belt matches. UL defeated South Alabama by a score of 2-0 Friday night with senior forward Chelsea Balestra scoring both of the Cajuns' goals. The Cajuns then fell to Troy by a final of 1-0 on Sunday. UL outhsot Troy but gave up an 85th minute goal that was the difference.
The goal surrendered against Troy was the first goal scored against in the Cajuns in 335 minutes of action. The last goal before the Trojans 85th minute strike came at Louisiana State in the 19th minute of a September 12th contest.
The Cajuns defense has been stellar thus far in 2010, giving up just ten goals in 11 matches for a 0.90 goals against average, the fourth best mark in the Sun Belt. Amanda Moorefield has spent the majority of the time in net for UL and has recorded three shutouts. The Cajuns as a whole have recorded five blank sheets which ties the 2010 team with three others for the most shutouts in Cajuns history.
The offense has been led by Kelli Jestes who leads the squad with four goals thus far this season and is UL's career leader in goals scored. Balestra provided all of the offense last weekend as her two goals gave her three for the year and thrust her into the Top 10 on the Cajuns career goal scored list. Jestes and Balestra are two of four current Cajuns in the Top 10 (Courtney Hofland, 2nd, and Cayla Chatman, 7th).
Hofland leads the Cajuns with three assists and currently sits in a tie for first place in that career category.
No.25 Denver (8-2-0, 2-0-0) enters Friday's contest after shutting out both Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky last weekend and ranked for the first time this season. For her efforts last weekend, the Pioneers goalie Lara Campbell was named this week's Sun Belt Player of the Week. Campbell was also named one of College Soccer 360's Primetime Performers of the Week.
The Pioneers were preseason favorites to win the Sun Belt crown and haven't lost since a September 17th defeat at the hands of No.10 UCLA.
North Texas (5-5-1, 0-2-0) enters the weekend after losing two matches at Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky last weekend. The Mean Green started their season 4-0 but have since gone 1-5-1. The Mean Green scoring attack is led by Kelsey Hodges who has posted six goals this season.
