Louisiana's golf team didn’t budge from the start of the tournament, and finished in fourth place here Wednesday following the third and final round of the Sun Belt Conference Golf Championships.

The Cajuns struggled to a team 306 score on Wednesday’s final loop around the 6,866-yard par-72 Bluewater Bay Resort course after back-to-back 297 scores on the first two days, and finished with an even 900 score to finish in the fourth spot.

New Mexico State won its first-ever Sun Belt golf title and did it going away, with the Aggies turning in a two-under 286 in Wednesday’s final round and finishing at even-par 864 for the three-day meet. Defending champion North Texas was a distant second, 18 strokes back at 882, while South Alabama was third at 887.

Louisiana finished one stroke ahead of Western Kentucky (901) and two ahead of UALR 902) in a three-team battle for that spot. Middle Tennessee finished at 905, Denver at 906, Arkansas State at 922 and New Orleans at 940.

Cajun senior Brett Ashmore, the squad’s leader since Monday’s opening round, finished with a two-over 74 on Wednesday and tied for sixth in the individual race with a three-over 72-73-74—219 score.
